Stories about real people that perhaps the majority of the world didn't even know existed. Instead of telling the same old story over and over. Like stories about the American Revolution or movies about World War 1 & 2.
What I don't get is whenever there is a romance of different races, why must they be of so much strife. Its like they can't or won't write romances the same way they write same race romances.
There are different forms of strife in all of humanity. Conflict and challenges will happen regardless of a person/film character's skin colour. I can't think of any story--filmed or otherwise--where everything is hunky dory and zero problems existed. If such a story does exist, I doubt it's interesting.
You do realize this story is based on real life events, right?
This is a love story where the strife is because she is white and he is black. Almost all of these films are written to show what they have to endure. I'm just saying once in a while there can be something written where man meets woman and they fall in love. All interracial films don't have to be written the sameway.
Please note that the strife portrayed in the film comes from society and not the couple themselves. They are simply living in a loving relationship but the native Botswanans and British government were the ones reacting in hysteria.
When someone tries to pair an interracial couple together on film, there are people in REAL LIFE who complain that such a relationship isn't "believable" or isn't popular/ideal enough to attract large audiences (and thereby earn a huge profit). So there is drama and/or conflict involved regardless--whether it's created for a film plot or expressed towards actual performers. That is the reality. Filmmakers don't lack imagination; they would love to tell regular "boy meets girl" stories featuring mixed couples. Unfortunately, Hollywood studio execs aren't as accommodating in greenlighting projects because their eye is always on the bottom line (i.e will this film make money?).
Two films I can think of off the top of my head which feature an interracial couple WITHOUT the racial tension angle: Pieces of April (Derek Luke & Katie Holmes), Shame (Michael Fassbender & Nicole Beharie).
Those films exist, see any film with Zoe Saldana, Thandie Newton, or Halle Berry or Will Smith in Focus. Those films are set in more recent times and race is not even mentioned.
