I didn't fully understand the get out clause in the report???

I went to see this movie at the weekend - thought it was well acted but I didn't really understand all the politics that surrounded the storyline.. in particular the get out clause in the (hargidan/harrington report??? ) that they discovered with regards to south africa which meant that he could reign as King? It would be great if someone could objectively explain it to me. Thanks in advance.

Scroll down to Movie Info in this link. It explains this politically charged love story in one paragraph: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/a_united_kingdom

It's best to watch a film such as this, then delve into the history of the era, then rewatch.

From what I understood of it, the report admitted that although the decision to exile Seretse was supposedly made for the good of his own people, it was really because the South African government wanted to annex Botswana. The the English were making deals with the South Africans, and that couldn't be allowed to get out.

thanks - but then what was the clause in the report that Seretse found which allowed him to indeed return to Botswana?

Sorry about the late reply - holidays, you know? Anyway, to answer your question, Seretse just threatened to make the whole thing public. The British government definitely didn't want that, so they allowed Seretse to stay in Botswana. No loophole, just good old fashioned blackmail.
