Evil Kate isn't working for me.

The actress could pull off sweet and innocent. She can't pull off scary and menacing. I'm having trouble suspending disbelief on her character suddenly being a totally evil butt-kicking monster.

I feel like she's a better fit as a villain.

I have only seen one scene so far (in my country, Netflix only has the first episode instead of the whole double premiere) but I got serious Dark Willow vibes from her, which is a great thing in my book. I might change my mind later, but so far, I like her being a villain.

She's possessed.  She's still going to look like innocent Kate.

I think Madison is a decent enough actress to pull off playing evil, but for totally different reasons, I'm hoping we may still see some of "old Kate" resurface at some point later in the season. Somehow it's less interesting to me if her "body" is only being used as a vessel for this demon, and there is nothing left of Kate's personality or memories in there.

Kate's character had a unique value right up until her "death" last season, especially being the only "innocent" left, and as sort of moral center, and someone who could possibly inspire Seth to get away from all of the madness, that just keeps getting worse. I always thought Seth & Kate had some potentially great chemistry, and even though the show runners teased us a couple of times, they stopped just short of really going there.

Also, I know some may have preferred Kate with Richie, but he actually seems to be eternally linked to Santanico. Now, here we are two eps into season 3, and it's still hard to tell where the character arcs are going for this season, though mostly I just want them to keep it interesting.

Keep in mind we're always biased by the roles we first see an actor in. I remember another thread talking about how Anthony Head speaking in an American accent just seemed wrong and totally fake, because of course most of us here in the states know him as Giles. For the same reason Hugh Laurie speaking in a British accent sounds weird (even though that's how he really talks) because we all know him as Dr. House.

Actually I think she pulled off evil very well. Extremely well.

reply

Agreed; she does evil well...the kid's got lots of range. I wonder how Kate will shake out after this season.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

The thing that gave her away as an actress was her voice. When playing the evil queen there simply was not enough tension or sense of menace in her delivery. She seemed like a teen playing an older person in HS theater. She said the lines but there was nothing behind them.

Tom Savani suffers from the same problem only he just seems to be a mediocre actor. Fine make-up artist; not so fine actor.

reply

agreed! I was just coming here to make a post about it but seen you beat me to it....
its been the only low point of the whole series and her attempts to act super duper bad arse, like mother of all evil bad, was borderline cringe worthy for me.
Its not the character itself, as it sounds like a good way for the story to go on paper but the actress couldn't pull it off, her evil face is like a blank expression and that little tilting of the head thing just looked lame..
remembering this is the main antagonist of season 3 for me just doesn't fit the role

reply

Absolutely agree, Since she was possessed and evil the first thing going through my mind was she can never pull it off and she failed miserably.
Tbf I never saw the gain in having her on the show, quite quickly her spark was gone, the others are just so much more part of the well oiled machine of the Cast, she is the only odd one out.

I hoped she would die, so many times, but they just keep bringing her back. Now in the end she stays with the Geckos instead of her brother lmao it just seems absolutely stupid at this point. Get someone who cant act at least a little, who has some vibe and chemistry to fulfill the role, she must have some ties to some decision maker of the show otherwise I wouldn't know how she got that Role and such a big one as well. She ruined every scene she appeared in towards the end.
Shame, shame , shame!

reply

She's not especially believable in either role, imo.

Total drama queen. 😭
