Were they aware of how generic & unoriginal the plot is?

You've got your ancient prophecy about a chosen one, your 'Han Solo'-type character in Hook, your Hollywood-tough girl who the audience is supposed to like because she puts the Han-Solo-type character in his place, an villain with a generic and unoriginal motive, and of course lots of pretty CGI. I feel like the story of Peter Pan deserves a better origin story than this. Even OUAT's origin story for Peter was more original. They just copied and pasted a tired generic story and tired generic character archetypes and threw in some big money actors and CGI. They can't honestly can't be surprised it didn't do as well as they hoped?

The whole "Chosen One" plot has become a overused cliché,often stuck into stories, like "Peter Pan",where is simply does not belong.
