The Biggest Problem with This Movie is . ..

The biggest problem with this movie is that they based it on Peter Pan. It was it's own thing and basically had very little to do with the source material other than character names and it takes place in Neverland. So everyone going in had preconceived ideas of what to except while the film maker was just doing his own thing.

Also I think that Joe Wright was VERY VERY ignorant about the issue of Tigerlily when he cast Rooney Mara. IMO she did a good job, she's an Oscar nominated actor so you except her to do a good job, but his reasoning for not hiring a Native American is beyond ridiculous to the point of being idiotic:

“In the book, the natives are described as being redskins, which is a term I don’t really recognize. So I couldn’t work out where they were natives of,”

He's saying because he doesn't recognize the term therefore there is no known definition for it. That's like a two year old saying they don't recognize vegetables as food and their parents going along with it. It's a stupid point on his part.

Basically if he would have done his own thing, away from the Pan story no one would have questioned him about the race of Tigerlily or on anything for that matter.

It wasn't a great movie. It had a truly terrible first act imo, but once it got going it was a good campy kids movie. There were a lot of problems, but most of the problems seemed to stem from basing the movie on Peter Pan to begin with.

I agree that the preconceived notions of Peter Pan affect the viewing of this film greatly. It's asking a lot of people who know the original story to accept some of the big changes- that he is now a child of a warrior and a prince and is part of a prophecy, that pixie dust is like some drug to keep you young etc. These things would bother people who know the Pan story well. The movie tries to explain or create an origin for everything about Peter Pan and Neverland, taking away a lot of the mystery and metaphor, and making it all too literal.

But, if you're willing to forget all that there is some enjoyment to be had from this, though there are are lot of dull spots.

Joe Wright's casting of Tigerlily is clearly just his own preference, and any justification is rubbish. It was a huge detriment to the film for me.

I guess the movie could've been done without any mention of Peter Pan at all. It could've been other characters on Neverland, in another time. Or just another place altogether. I don't think you can mess with the Peter Pan mythology too much.

Ultimately, I think without the "Peter Pan" name, it is just another run-of-the-mill kid's movie. And the box office reflected that. You can't use the Pan brand to disguise that.

The whole thing with Tiger Lily and that tribe of hippies from The Burning Man was not really the worst on this movie.

It's more than just that. Smee appears as younger man and Hook does too. I wonder if the writer ever read the book. People are not supposed to age in Neverland. In addition, ships don't fly in Peter Pan's story, unless covered in fairy dust.

I really wish people stopped mutilating classics like these. What Guy Ritchie did to Sherlock Holmes was a crime! What was done recently to the Three Musqueteers is reason enough to be sent to jail.

I gave 5 stars for the production and the good cast, but the script is an insult to the memory of J. M. Barrie.

And the shoehorning in of the whole "Chosen One" crap did not help. That has become an overused ,tired, cliché.

Well I can see why he wanted to make a sort of prequal but in doing this I agree that he failed in his respect to the original material.

Anyway, he should just have done Régis Loisel's Peter Pan. His vision was spectacular for a prequal. If you don't know this, check him out. Highly recommendable.

the original doesn't actually refer to them as redskin it only refers to them as Piccaninny
which mind you didn't actually discribe a native of the america's Pickaninny (also picaninny or piccaninny or pickinniny) is a term in English which refers to dark-skinned children usually of African descent or a racial caricature thereof. so if you want to get technically they should all be black
