I Don't Remember Tiger Lily At All!

Peter Pan has been a part of my conscious memory ever since I was a child. I remember him, his shadow, the Lost Boys, Wendy, Tinkerbell, and Captain Hook.

I used to listen to his story on the old 45-records, where it would "beep" to let you know when to turn the page in the accompanying book. I also vaguely remember seeing the Disney film.

However, I never watched any major Peter Pan movies, including Hook. I've never seen any modern Peter Pan related shows, plays, or spin-offs.

My only memories of Peter Pan (however vague they may be) are from the old records that I used to listen to, and word-of-mouth stories that may have been shared by my elementary school teachers and librarians. Mind you, this was 40 years ago.

Having said that, I have absolutely no recollection of the Tiger Lily character at all. NONE. I swear this is the first time I've ever heard of her. If she was always present in Peter Pan lore, then I must not have internalized her into my conscious memory.

Any ideas on why this might be? And am I the only one with this problem?

This tells of how Peter ended up in Neverland before meeting Wendy, before a Captain hook.

Wondering if you remember the 70s and 80s cartoon versions that often had Pan and/or some lost boys captured by the natives and tied to sticks...

Anyway, I was born in 1967 and I remember Tiger Lily from earliest readings. She is in the original 'Peter and Wendy' too. The Wild West may have been fading, but it was still a famous part of world culture in the early 1900s, and quite a popular theme in Europe.

Now- I watched Sesame Street as a kid, and I never heard of Elmo until the doll craze in the mid 90s. My conclusion is that I accidentally shifted to a universe very similar to the one I was born in. Perhaps that is what happened to you?

I don't know. I don't think Elmo was around in the very early days of Sesame Street. I'm pretty sure he came later.

I only remember Peter and the lost boys fighting against the pirates. No recollection of any natives at all.

Psychologically speaking if you had negative attitudes towards native Americans reinforced in your childhood then a child's mind would simply ignore the offensive characters in a favorite story. Simply put you blocked it out because you thought it was offensive to you or someone you cared about or because the native American aspect didn't appeal to your imagination in some way.

I have about five versions of the story, altho not the version you remember nor the Barrie book, and Tiger Lily is in some of them (including one Walt Disney one) and omitted in others. She's not a major character in the ones she is in, but the most she does is lead the "redskins" who were following the pirates, and later get captured by Hook. Peter freed her by imitating Hook's voice and ordering his henchmen to let her go. The wikipedia article about the plot of the 1953 movie mentions her.

Maybe it is a gender issue?
