Terrible Fight scenes. Fight choreographer needs to be fired.

So slow and awkward, unnecessary wire work. It's like they are a first time amateurs trying to duplicate the magic of Chinese Kung Fu movies and failing miserably.

And I know it's not about the casting of Finn Jones b/c they made it work with Charlie Cox in Daredevil. Somethings just off, maybe it's that Dexter director who bit off more than he could chew.

reply

I agree on everything you said. As for the casting of Finn, maybe it's just the editing. They need to up their game in season 2 because I want this show to succeed. I like it but if it has so many problems in its first season, I'm afraid it will go downhill if they don't remedy it asap!

reply

Jessica Jones is riddled with problems too. It's very inconsistent. I have to say I like this show better than Jessica Jones.

reply

I've never seen Jessica Jones though, aside from Daredevil, this is the second Marvel show I've seen. I might watch The Punisher as I like the actor and the character from Daredevil.

reply

They could've probably sped it up some bit to make it more fluid in a sense but they kept the slow, awkward fight choreography. It's like a slow dance and the protagonist doesn't seem to have good balance when he's doing his chi training. He wobbles here and then besides hits vision flashbacks which I excluded.

^^^This. You can see how awkward he is on his feet, he doesn't have a good balance at all and looks about to tip over at any minute. But I find this to be characteristic of some of the other actors as well, but it's more prominent on Finn unfortunately.

reply

Although I rather enjoyed them, at the end of the day they were definitely sloppy and unexciting compared to Daredevil's fight scenes (or any good tv/movie fight scene, for that matter). A show like this NEEDS great choreography. I understand if they wanted to try something different and have their own style, but clearly they didn't succeed.

Regarding Jones, I liked him as Danny but there's undoubtedly a lot of room for improvement. For being the mighty Iron Fist, he lacked the strong presence you would expect from the character.

reply

Sadly I have to agree, I'm 5 episodes in and while I like the show so far, it' definitely has issues, the fight choreography being a big one, I've still liked a few of the action scenes, but I keep thinking this could have been so much better if... I don't understand why they don't just use the same people who did Daredvil for all this, it's not like they were made at the same time. But I really like Finn Jones as Danny, and I love Jessica Henwick as Collen, all the issues with the show are fixable so I really hope it gets a second season.

reply

the collen wing fight scenes are the most terrible. they are faker then the wwe.. there is litterly a scene when you see her feet kicking the floor not even touching the face.LOL. the cage fights were the most cringe. 2 bulldogs towring over her and her fragile fake weak fists bearly touch them and they go ''hwwwwaaa'' LOL. such a terrible show.

reply

collween wing is one of the best things in the show.

reply

BECUASE SHES GOOD LOOKING? OTHER THEN THAT SHE SUCKS

reply

Agreed.

Camera placing, the pacing, and choreography were just bad. That didn't allow the show to stand any higher.

reply

Daredevil had the fortune of having a hero who mostly wore a mask so that he could be doubled if needed. Finn Jones’ face is exposed, so the fighting suffers by having cast a non-martial artist, or even someone who “moves well” like a dancer, for example.
If the fight scenes were all quick cuts, I’d be annoyed. So, I’ll take the ultra slow choreography They *could* have undercranked the camera like they do in Hong Kong and slightly sped up the action. Aka the Matrix. But, I won’t complain too much.
Jones brings the acting, and someone who was say, an MMA champ may have been able to do the fighting, but not bring the drama.
I still like the show quite a bit.

reply

So do I. A bit. Cheers!

reply

There have been non-trained actors that were better portrayed in a martial arts film. You mentioned The Matrix and Keanu, Moss, and Fishburne were trained when they were cast only and the fight scenes were infinitely better. Lee from Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story was also not a trained fighter yet he looked much better in film - he is however a dancer which is an advantage for him in picking up the training.

In HK, they used to get actresses with a background in dancing to portray martial artists. Even Bruce Lee was a Cha Cha Cha Ballroom Dancer Champion and he firmly believed that one's skill in dancing is connected to one's skill in martial arts. Perhaps they should've hired actors who had rhythm and could dance somewhat so that they could learn much quicker than those who cannot coordinate themselves that well. Someone mentioned above that Finn for example looks to have very poor balance and wobbles on his feet, trained or even non-professionally trained dancers instinctively know that they need a good balance and not wobble on their feet.

reply

I agree!

The advantage that the Matrix folks had besides Reeves naturally "moving well" and I believe Moss has a dance background - or at least studied "movement in college. Fishburne was a bit stiffer - but, given that he's older than the others, I'll give him a pass. But, if you watch the BTS making of, they had a LOT of prep time for the choreography. Reeves is actually wearing a neck brace in one interview, he worked so hard. Moss, I believe was injured doing wire work. But, a film generally has more production time than a television series. And you're correct about Jason Scott. He's a dancer and I believe a surfer as well.

The character of Danny Rand is supposed to be a martial arts master. And to see a guy who looks like he's in a level 1 karate class move around is slightly embarrassing. He looks worse than David Carradine. But, most of those scenes were shot in slow-mo. Again, if they used "under-cranking" it may have made Finn's fight scenes look tighter. But, that's not the look they were going for, cinematic-ally I guess.

reply

Exactly, Dungbeatle! He has trained all his life in brutal conditions, he said, he should move better.

And nice input about dancing, it's interesting... perhaps that's the reason Finn looks like a fish.

reply

LOL! "looks like a fish". But, I like the guy as an actor. He's been placed in a tough position, and I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for this show, at least. Maybe he'll have taken some more lessons and look a bit better in "The Defenders"...or, maybe he'll be wearing a mask, and they can hire a fight double for him.

reply

This was an extremely odd series for me personally..

I'm not hard to please, I'm not some movie critic that looks for Deep, technical and Great movies...Mostly just give me good action and I'm happy.

for example the Transformers movies...I enjoy the hell out of those movies, They are fun movies with great action but Dear god they are awful overall movies, awful stories and characters....I can understand why anyone would hate them but again I'm not hard to please, I enjoy them for exactly what they are Mindless, fun action movies...

I'm big on The Action Icons movies to0....Van Damn, Stallone...Arnold...Statham...Snipes...damn near all of their movies have awful stories, but I enjoy the hell out of them for the action...

But Iron Fist turned out to be very odd for me...I read the reviews and knew going in the Show was getting banned and wasn't going to be very good...but I wanted to watch it anyways because I figured I would enjoy it because of the action, I figured it was going to have an awful story but some decent action, and while I can understand why critics and others would hate it, I wouldn't because I really dont care if the stories are bad, just give me some action and I'm happy.

well stunningly, It was just the complete opposite....The story and characters were the Only thing I enjoyed and only reason I continued to watch...The Action was Just Brutal to try and watch, I mean that literally, it was so bad, so poorly done, so uninteresting, I honestly could not stand watching the action seqeuences by the 3rd episode, Every time an Action sequence started,I just wanted it to be over...

I finished the series, I actually really liked, but again The show was a very odd experience for me, It completely went against my usual standards, I went in expecting that I would watch the show for the action and have to struggle through an awful story and characters...

but actually I ended up watching and enjoying the show for the story and characters and was forced to SUFFER through some of the worst action sequences I've ever seen.

Also Fin JOnes as Danny Rand was NOT one of the characters I enjoyed...He was a complete miscast and In no way made a good Iron fist...I truly can't believe they let him take his shirt off once in the series let alone a half a dozen times....His BOyish physique was absolutely embarrassing, I can not believe Marvel Didn't force him to work out and get in some sort shape.

Joy,Ward,Harold and Colleen were just fantastic....IMO

reply

My thoughts exactly!

And in a show called Iron Fist about the best martial arts fighter in the whole frigging Marvel Universe.

You'd think that Marvel Netflix shows would get better with more experience, but no!!
They had to keep fiddling and switching the creative teams behind the shows. Some of them are absolute hacks and I blame the showrunners for letting them ruin the TV universe.

If only they kept Daredevil's team for all the shows, we'd have a better paced, better written and better executed Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

What we are left with sadly:
*Superb villain in JJ
*Superb music in LC
*Anything but the martial arts in IF. :(

reply

I LOVED Daredevil, Both Seasons....

I LOVED Jessica Jones

Luke Cage was completely average, But I'm probably not the best judge because I can't get past Mike Colter as Luke Cage, I just think he awful in the role.

and Iron Fist was by far The Netflix's series weakest effort.

My Rankings would be-
Daredevil Season 1---9.5/10
Jessica Jones Season 1---9.5/10
Daredevil Season 2---9/10
Luke Cage Season 1---7.5/10
Iron Fist----7/10(Maybe 6.5/10)

I am extremely excited for The Upcoming Defenders and The Punisher(Jon Bernthal Just NAILED it in Season 2)

reply

IMO, Luke Cage was better than Daredevil. They went a bit overboard with black pride speeches, but the acting, photography, music - everything was better. I'm not saying Daredevil is bad, just that Cage was better. The best thing about DD2 was Bernthal. Like you said - he nailed it.

those retards dont even understand the charecter. the show isnt even the iron fist. you can call it marvel's danny rand and his friends instead. they dont even show you kun lun. i mean. i know its a tv budget but you dont need a budget to show the interior of a tibetian monestery bunch of idiots who made this show dident even bother to show his origin story. how he discoverd kun lun. how they accepted him. and so on. his reletionship with davos. lei kung the thunderer. they dident even botherd to show him. all the netflix shows up to this had flashbacks to show the hero origins. even luke cage had the prison episode (which was one of the few luke cage episodes that actually worked) i was ok with not seeing the dragon fight. even though its also possile as agents of shield used cgi to make ghost rider. sure it would look fake as hell but its better then nothing. but ok i was fine with shau lau not appering. but godammit. you can make an iron fist show with frikin 13 episodes without showing he got to the position of the iron fist. instead he keep mentioning his buisness there over and over but thats fucking lazy and stupid.

SHOW AND DO NOT TELL you morons. thats what i would say to those idiots. my god. whats the point of showing davos in episode 10 if you dident show his reletionship with danny in kun lun. and hes an asian in the comics (davos) and the whole reason why he hates danny and became a vilian is because hes angry that he was bested by danny's father who was an outsider to kun lun while hes a native to kun lun. this is why he became a vilian. thats why the idiotic loser sjw's who dont know shit about the charecters dont get. the whole conflict between davos and danny is the fact that danny and his father are outsider to kun lun while hes a native to kun lun. but this show went full retard by casting davos to be some mexican guy. now it dosent make any fuckin sense at all.

but nooooo forget the iron fist buisness i mean who cares if that the name of the frikin super hero who lead this show. lets see the mechums soap opera stuff. sooo much more interesting.

No character development: 1/10

"No character development: 1/10"

^^^
are you talking about Danny Randy, if so I agree

But I literally could not disagree more with Ward,Joy and Harold...

Those 3 characters were Fascinating and went through excellent character arks....The Dynamics of That family was incredible....those 3 characters and the actors that played is what kept me watching the show...Danny, The Action and Story was all bad though

I even liked Colleen, although her character wasn't on the same level as Joy,Ward and Harold

reply

the show messed up in this area as well. making ward a good guy in thw end and blaming everything on his father? he knew about the airplane crash. he knew this is danny from the begining. he gave the order to lock danny in a room with other patients trying to kill him. while his father gave the order to release him. so, ward is a piece of shit just like his father. i dont get why they made him a good guy in the end. what bullshit this is

reply

Yes, I was talking about Danny there, and yes, I agree with you on Ward, Joy and Harold.

The guy who plays Ward really surprise me; they were times where I thought he was going to shoot himself or something, lol, really painful +1

And Joy... she always kept me on the edge of my seat because I was never really sure which side she was on, I guess we figured that out at the end... +1

Annnnd, of course, Harold. Once a soab, always a soab, even after returning from the dead. +1

reply

Finn Jones needed more training. It is too obvious he is not a martial artist. He's stiff when he should be soft, soft when he should be hard and just too robotic.

reply

Considering how great, dynamic and raw the fights in DD were, there is simply no excuse.
It looked like a B-grade "martial arts" 80-s movie with some pretty boy pretending to be a great kung fu master.
