Anybody else worried about the showrunner?

Scott Buck.

The man who drove Dexter into the ground. He was promoted to show runner for the final three seasons, which was widely considered to be a major down turn for a series that started off so well.

I've yet to meet or talk to anyone who would defend the tail end seasons of Dexter.

I hope he does a better job with this.

I have heard the higher ups wanted certain things to happen in Dexter and Buck complied. It could have been a nerwork screw job.

That's the most likely reason why Dexter got worse. I'm sure Buck's competent and can write a good show. Usually too much involvement by the execs is what kills shows.

reply

Having binged all of Dexter at once.
It's decline is greatly exaggerated. Noticeable 100%, but exaggerated. A lot of decent ideas with poor execution. With some solid performances from the guests.

A lot of their problems were actor availability like Ray Stevenson, and network interference.

I'm worried now based on his NYCC interview. He indicates this will be a much lighter toned series. I worry we will have a few too many one liners or humor in it. I admit the premise of iron fist is pretty grim (father killed by partner, mother eaten by wolves in front of son, son then adopted into foreign land and made to fight, comes back to NYC for revenge and finds his father's killer missing limbs...) and so I can see how it may be a bit too dark. But there's a difference between showing Danny's perseverance through hardship, showcasing his optimism and making a light toned series with action in it.

I worry Scott Buck doesn't get the character.

Buck used to wirk on Rome, Six Feet Under, and Dexter. Those are all fairly somber or dark shows. Iron Fist would be lighter by contrast.

reply

I don't know which episodes of Dexter were his, but maybe he wrote some good ones there as well. I'm not at all concerned about him being the showrunner for Iron First.

reply

Luke Cage was supposedly going be humorous, I didn't find it so.

Its decline isn't exaggerated at all. The first and second halves of the series are diametrically opposed in terms of every metric of quality. the acting, directing, cinematography, storytelling, atmosphere, thematic grit, and dialogue all massively suffered.

Season five was practically a soap opera with a big bad whose entire concept was handled far more exceptionally and gruesomely in a single season one episode.

Season six relied far too heavily on a crappy twist and inevitably fizzled out.

Season seven completely dropped the ball on Debra's revelation.

Season eight was complete and utter dog$hït from start to finish. The Big Bang Theory has produced better television than almost any of the season's episodes, and that's not an exaggeration.

Trinity should've gotten away in season four and season five should've been both the conclusion of the Trinity storyline and Dex's exposure. Season six should've been Dex's entire world crumbling down around him as he's running from a nationwide manhunt triggered by Miami Metro's investigation, followed by a proper denouement with Dex either serving life in solitary confinement or getting executed. They tried making him too much of a good guy hero and it backfired disastrously. The show thrived on the moral ambiguity.

Not in the least. Marvel hasn't let me down yet, I have total faith in their choices.

Marvel manages to squeeze all the personality and individual style out of all its products, so that might work in Scott Buck's favour.

Due to the lack of moderators, trolls can ruin the IMDB message boards. Don't feed them.

If I was a Marvel fan I might care.

If I had bothered to give a damn to watch Dexter then I might be concerned.

However, being a DC fan and someone who didn't have to watch Dexter to know it was terrible and not for me, I think this puts me in an advantageous position for Iron Fist.

I'm unfamiliar with Buck's previous work therefore any future opinions I may have about this show can't be prejudiced by what he has done especially considering there are a number of scenarios which can make this flop and not all of them involve Buck.

I'm willing to let this show sink or swim on its own merit.
