How popular is Iron Fist in the comic world?

how popular is he? is he an A or B list character? does he have really rabid fans?

reply

He's a b-lister. He has his fanbase, but it isn't huge.

He's not a mainstay of the Marvel line-up like Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Daredevil or Wolverine - these are characters who continue to be popular enough to always have their own comic-book printed month after month.

He's not as significant as, say, Doctor Strange, who has not always been popular enough to keep his own comic going, but has a niche in the MU and enough of a fan-base that he is guaranteed several guest-appearances a year to keep him in the fans' collective conciousness.

Iron Fist is a character that has had several well-respected comic-book runs and through these has built up a fan following of modest proportions, yet has never quite hit that home-run to make his own title permanently viable. However, especially in the last ten years or so, there has been a feeling (mainly due to the critically acclaimed Immortal Iron Fist series) that he is a character with potential on the verge of breaking out. That is why Marvel stuck him in a Spider-Man cartoon and gave him slots in some of their relatively recent video games - they feel he's close to breaking through if he gets a bit of a push.

So yeah, he has fans (I'm one, have been since the eighties) but he's never been a really big name like those mentioned in my first paragraph.

He's a C-lister.

He's never had a successful solo comic run that I can remember. His most successful incarnations have been as an ensemble character or a second-fiddle to another character. Power Man and Iron Fist was the peak of his career, and that was nearly 40 years ago.

That said, there is nothing wrong with being a C-lister. Some of my favorite comic characters are C-listers, and you never know when a C-lister might bump up a notch or two. Just look at Deadpool and Harley Quinn. Deadpool was a throwaway one-off baddie in the New Mutants before becoming arguably the most important character in the Marvel comic universe, and Harley Quinn didn't even exist in the comics until she was ported over from the DC animated universe, yet now she is one of the most popular characters in DC comics.

Great point.

Do you feel his own show and inclusion in the Defenders will drastically bump him up into solid B-class?

reply

It will certainly raise awareness of the character. I suspect the resurrection of the Power Man and Iron Fist title in the comic universe is directly tied to the fact that both characters are now featured in Netflix series. The only question in my mind is whether any of the Netflix characters will make the jump to the A-list like Iron Man did back in 2008. Personally, I don't think that is likely if they remain exclusive to the Netflix platform, but I could be wrong.

The immortal iron fist is quite good.

The Immortal Iron Fist was a successful solo comic and quite good.

I thought that the plot sounded familiar. This is a rip off of the 1968 TV show The Champions. Only difference is that there are 3 spies, and the stupid costume thing. I would like to see the TV show become a remake. With today's CGI could be pretty good with the right cast.

reply

I was a fan of The Champions too. It, like Iron Fist, was probably inspired by Amazing-Man, a super-hero who was trained by monks in Tibet to master his body and mind to perform super-human feats. He debuted in 1939.

reply

Amazing-Man actually appears as a character in The Immortal Iron Fist.

reply

I say he's C-list. He's known to comic fans, but he's not widely read. He has fans though.

I highly recommend The Immortal Iron Fist comic series for people wanting to learn more about him. This Netflix series could move him solidly into the B-list if it's well received.

In the 80's a kid in elementary school stuffed a comic book into my desk, when I looked at it, it was Iron Fist #14 the first appearance of Sabertooth, I still have it, but that's the only reason I know him and I was a pretty big comic book fan lol

Comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable

As a new comic book reader i find the immortal iron fist series to be much more interesting then any of the spider man and avengers ones

reply

I think what attracting me to the iron fist charecter and world

(as a new comic book reader)

Is the fact that his origin story is compleatly original. And the all concept of kun-lun and the legend of the iron fist (danny rand isnt the only one)

The way he got his powers by defeting a dragon. His super powers where he can concentrate all his chi into a powerfull fist. Its all very diffrent from the others.

Most heros either has the accident origin story or being an expiriment. Or you have the other kind like batman and iron man who are just rich man who use high tech stuff.

So yes iron fist is defienetly a special kind of hero and if done right he can be on top of the b-list.
