What was all that 'you blew off the dinner plan' stuff
like, 'oh yeah, sorry about that, I've got dementia,' surely the scene belonged before the diagnosis, or was it just an incredibly clumsy attempt to show lack of sympathy?

shareExcept that he was acting like that because he'd been so worried. If he hadn't been worried, he'd just have gone to the dinner without her. He was angry because he'd been worried sick about her. She wasn't too bothered because she'd completely forgotten about their plans.
shareExactly. It's like when a parent scolds a child who has been found after being lost, "don't you ever do that again." You might think that the parent would just immediately hug and kiss the child, but oftentimes first the anger comes out -- This is coming from the parent who was so worried and so scared that they would never see their child again.
Of course John didn't go to the important dinner without her because he was so worried. If she had not had her condition, he might have gone and left a note for her to join them when she gets home. What is ridiculous is that she doesn't carry a cell phone with her when she runs -- despite her condition.
I agree, i watched a movie in my country about a mother who didn't really care about her daughter and was so busy with gambling that she didn't notice that her daughter didn't come home the night before
the daughter with on boat in the sea with her college friends and the captain died so they were stuck there for 3 days
once she found her daughter again who was crying and running towards her, she slaps her and then hugs her tightly
of course i am not comparing this to your incident or saying you didn't care or something but just mentioning it because it totally made sense to me when i watched her and i respected those who made that movie more for this slap.
It is never about what happened, it is only how you look at it!
Actually, I thought she acted very distant toward him. When she came back from LA and walked in the door with him waiting to welcome her home, she just brushed by him saying she was tired. I think it was weird after traveling and being separated from him without a kiss or hug hello. She came across as a very selfish person.
I just wasn't made for these times. (Brian Wilson)
I understood her being in a bad mood when she arrived. It was a taxing trip for one, the Lydia news and she first noticed something was wrong with her in LA then she got lost while running. She was an emotional wreck.
