Anna was a bitch.
I could tell right from the start. All those snide comments. I would have had to tell her something.

I'm an administrator at a law school. Her disposition was spot on.
shareAgreed. She was unsupportive, melodramatic, and selfish. I couldn't stand her.
shareGod, yes. In so many ways people have mentioned, and more. Even when she wasn't murmuring some little bit of condescension, she had that judgy look in her eyes all. the. time. Never let up for a second, with the one semi-exception being when she was in the delivery room.
And I'll say what others have thought but not said yet-- that right there was yet another layer of her "it's all about me" gestalt. She was told she carried a gene that results in a horrible, corrosive disease... and it's hereditary. A non-bitch would realize that not only is her baby-oven not working correctly to begin with (IVF), but any progeny coming from said womb would also be condemned to the same fate she's witnessing in her own mother. So perhaps adoption would become a consideration at this point...? Nope, what this world needs is more little doomed Annas running around, because her DNA is just that awesome.
The way Anna talked to her after Alice asked to hold the baby irritated me to no end. She talked to her mother like she was a little 5 year old asking for juice in a 'big girl' cup. It was interesting seeing such a stark difference between the two daughters, you could see which one values family more. While watching her I couldn't help but think "when you hit that point, I hope you don't have anybody like YOU around".
shareI hated the character as well, but it was explained that they had testing done to the fetuses pre-IVF to ensure the gene would not be carried.
I just thought it was remarkable that they really never showed any sort of reaction, by anyone, to the news that Anna would, without a doubt, fall victim to the exact same fate as her mother within the next couple of decades.
Yes, I think it was too much for them to cope with? I found it odd she progressed with the kids. Ok she tested them. Perhaps she'd still be of sound mind when they finish school, but graduate college? Probably not. Scary. I'd be scared if I were her husband too. In the book the brother was pretty upset by her genetic test results, but I think everyone was focussing on Alice.
