People who marketed this should be fired.

This is a movie I was not expecting much from.

Going by the trailers I expected a baked stoner comedy like something you might see Seth Rogan doing these days with loony action sequences with a "programmed" stoner that would be reminiscent of "Chuck".

Instead, this movie had almost nothing to do with pot or being stoned, it was in fact a relatively dark action movie with very slight dark comedy overtones.

It was a "very" different than all of the marketing tried to make it out to be and was a far better, far more serious movie than I expected.

I almost skipped this one based on the marketing, now I am very glad I did not, no thanks to the people who tried to sell this off as a stoner comedy flick.

the marketing was the reason it failed the stoner part was only 5 min in the film and didn't change the plotline the movie is fantastic if the marketing was good this film well be a hit
the second reason is rating it should be rated pg 13 not r

I agree.

The movie was never going to be a $100 million dollar blockbuster but it certainly could have done better than it ultimately did had it been marketed for what it actually is.

The marketing of this movie is actually a fairly big snub to the director, producer, and stars of the movie. It was directed and acted and produced to be a specific type of movie. The marketing team came along and decided "nah, that wont sell, lets market it like a Seth Rogan stoner comedy flick!

In no way should the marketing teams for these movies take it upon themselves to completely alter the direction/marketing of the movie into something that is nothing more than a stone faced lie. That is exactly what occurred here.

i find this movie one of the better films this year but again the marketing was awful they should have marketed it as it is and give it more credit not release the trailer befor 3 month of release and on same day with 2 other movies with same rating and it should be in 3d

You should probably go see more films then because it is by far the worst movie I have seen all year. Go watch straight outta compton if you want to see a good movie and the avengers. This one was terrible. The entire story was just stupid and made no sense.

i agree w/ you both. i knew almost nothing about this movie before i saw it. i had seen 1 commercial for it and all i recall of it was how the commercial/trailer focused on the pot smoking aspect of the movie. i remember (in the ad) where Jesse was freaking out saying he had killed someone/some people but i never in a million years thought this movie would be as action-y as it is. my friend and i ended up liking the movie a lot. i definitely agree 10000000000% that the marketing of this movie was it's downfall. the movie is really really good.

Totally agree, i was expecting a stoner version of The Bourne Identity, The Long Kiss Goodnight etc, you know the numerous movies there are about people forgetting they are specially trained but the marketing showed it as being a funny version of one of those movies about a stoner. The stoner side of things was not even important to the film in all honesty, it did not make it funny one bit with the likes of Cheech & Chong Up In Smoke etc instead we did get just another one of those "Oh i forgot i am a trained agent" movies that was no where near as good as the rest before it. The only thing it had going for it WAS the marketing imo otherwise i would not have bothered.

Yeah, the marketing made it look like it would be a straight-up action comedy. The tone was all over the place and the only part of it that really worked were the action scenes. I didn't care for how serious they played the romance at parts and most of the humor fell flat.

2/2 Eisenberg/Stewart movies marketed as someone completely different than what it was. Adventureland was passed off to be a Superbad-like comedy with Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader promoted way more than they actually were in the movie. This was promoted as some kind of Pineapple Express movie where some stoner accidentally kills some people. I remember seeing the commercials and I don't remember seeing anything about the CIA, nuclear bombs or any of the cast aside from the main two.

Yeah my mates and i were in to see Hitman and the trailer for this came on and we were all under the impression this was going to be heavily based on comedy of him being stoned and doing all these accidental cool things but in a funny way. We couldn't have been more wrong!
