A question about the rating.

Here, in Toronto, Canada, the film is only showing in three cinemas, which I would hardly call wide release. It has a rating of 18A here, which I believe is equivalent to an R rating in the US.

There's no nudity and hardly any swearing. The violence is at times surprising, but it doesn't dominate the film. The drug use is not rampant either.

Is it R in the States? Could it have been toned down and still be as enjoyable? I enjoyed it as is, but if its rating affected the number of screens it played on, I can see how that would affect it's box office.

In Alberta it's 14A

Yes, it's rated R in the U.S. I'm guessing it's for the violence, although I'm pretty sensitive to that kind of thing typically, and I wasn't bothered by it. I agree; I think it may have been on the edge between PG-13 and R.

If a movie has more than one use of the F word, it's almost guaranteed R. There was at least one and a decent amount of violence. I don't like it, but that's the rating system for you.

In that case, I wonder if it was intentionally R, to keep it cult or niche, or simply not to lose the edge. I understand that if you put in two breasts, it's an automatic R, which is why Lost In Translation has an R.

Hardly any swearing? Here in the U.S. the movie has language throughout with quite a few F-bombs. The movie must have been censored elsewhere.
