Well in a way it did. How quickly he just dumped her at the hint of an affair (wasn't the picture simply the two of them hugging maybe kissing?) with the director of "Snow white and the Huntsman".

Plus, and I am surprised this didn't get much traction, a former employee of the two when they lived together said they had a "open relationship" and that he saw other women and she saw other "men and women" and that was before her recent statement about being, or suggesting,her bi-sexuality.

Maybe not a "show for the crowds" as you say but Hollywood has a very long history of putting people together that, in the past, have married to keep appearances. Not always, but in some instances.

As far as the franchise? In the very beginning it wasn't the humongous billion dollar enterprise it became by the second film. Sure the first one was a surprise hit (Stewart has even said no one expected it to catch on like that and she was not prepared to suddenly be a celebrity) but the whole saga was not what it became.

I am talking out of my Hollywood hat here and have no idea what went on between them. They may have indeed been in love. They may have simply liked each other a whole lot. It all could have been a huge publicity stunt, aka, they did it for the studio but still lived their own lives on the side. The latter sounds like "Aliens Land on white House" material but... it is Hollywood, the land of illusion.
