Pretensious? Really?

Why people keep accusing Sorrenitno's style as pretentious? Because he refers to upper class? Or that he makes art his another actor? Or that you can observe such variety of means in his cinema?
Yes, he is usually concerned with upper class, but it's not like he pretends that others don't exist. They are there! Sometimes playing only episodic roles. But usually important to the main characters.
The thing that art is everywhere I find as on of the greatest virtues in his movies. While in modern cinema it's often pretty risky, Sorrentino can play it right. Ugliness intertwines with beauty, with no certainty which is which.
I LOVE IT!

I rarely feel so fulfilled when I watch others' movies. So what is it?

reply

The point is that Sorrentino pretends to be a great filmmaker, when he is nothing of the kind. This is the simplest pieces of confection, in an equally cheap, but shiny box.

reply

shine-2, completely agree. The film is extremely weak. I still haven't figured out what happened to the director of La grande bellezza, which was enchanting.

reply

OP you seem to be under the impression that when people say pretentious they mean upper class. It doesn't mean that at all.

reply

Don't worry, people on the message boards use the word pretentious when they really know what it means. I loved the film and it no way was it pretentious.

reply

Exactly. "Youth" is different but in no way pretentious

reply

Sorrentino on that:

Everyone in "Youth" is still very, very rich. What is it about the one percent that interests you as a filmmaker?

I'm not really fascinated by wealth. Actually, I'm more fascinated by artists. The wealthy people you see in the movie are all artists
