Yes, his name is Maurice Mickelwhite. I saw him in the "Quiet American" about Vietnam before the United States entered the fighting.
On the commentary track on the Quiet American DVD, he talked about being in combat in the Korean War as an enlisted man in the British Army. The Chinese would launch human wave attacks before dawn. He said they could smell them before they could see them as both sides were reduced to living like animals.
Before they got to Korea his unit stopped in Vietnam where the French were fighting. Many of the French Foreign Legion were ex German soldiers from WWII. As the might know, the French Foreign Legion takes foreigners without asking questions. If you survive until retirement, you get French citizenship and questions about your real name and any crimes you may have committed are not asked.
