Didn't get the Hitler thing

Missed the significance of that entirely. Loved the movie, and this bit was funny if nothing else. But I have no idea why he was doing it or what it meant. Any help?

Apparently the Paul Dano character was preparing to play Hitler in some upcoming movie. That's how I understood it. At some point in the movie I thought that Paul Dano was preparing to play Michael Caine's character, the composer, in a movie based on the composer's life. That would have explained why Dano was watching Caine so closely. But apparently that was not the case. It would have been an interesting "twist", though.

Yes. We knew he was there observing Fred to help him (the actor) prepare for his next role.

We were supposed to think the role was something like "World Famous Conductor," but I was waiting for the twist--e.g. it would turn out the character was an untalented conductor who fooled people throughout his whole successful career or maybe just a world-class jerk and not even a conductor at all.

I thought it was very funny when he was using Fred to model Hitler. Yikes.
