It's clearly a reworking of 1984

Of which THX 1138 Equilibrium both drew inspiration from. I'm talking about the George Orwell book not the John Hurt film.

Which in turn is loosely based on "We", a dystopian novel by Russian author Yevgeny Zamyatin, who emigrated to the UK soon after the Soviet Union was founded. It has a stronger resemblance to this film's plot, as "We" depicts a society where emotions and imagination are suppressed, and at the end of the novel forcibly removed. Orwell himself said he used it as a model for "1984" and even accused Aldous Huxley of lying when claiming his "Brave New World" was not inspired by "We".
