Kristen Stewart is good in this, but...

What really sinks Equals is how damn lethargic it is. It makes sense for the film to be so sullen and low-key in its first half as it establishes its emotionless utopia. Yet even after Silas and Nia are having passionate sex in color-changing rooms, a dullness prevails throughout, robbing the film of some much-needed impact. By the time Equals introduces last-minute twists about cures for SOS and a plan to escape into the wild territories that surround the neutered society, you may have already mentally checked-out. Equals is earnest enough, and there’s clearly great care and precision at work here. But a little less of the rigidity and a little more passion — which is exactly the thing the main characters want — would’ve gone a long way: http://www.cutprintfilm.com/reviews/equals/

While the film was quiet and slow paced I felt it had some intense scenes when the leads were connecting (mentally/physically). I think the general dullness was kept intentionally to reinforce the fact that this was happening in an emotionless world.

It's not a utopia. It's a dystopia.
