Did this movie bomb in the box office or not?
$15M budget... it only opened in 2 screens? WTF?
Show me the holes!

I've been asking this question a lot of late.
In my life, I've never really cared if a movie made a profit or not. But I notice a lot of people seem really obsessed with this. I've always only cared about whether I liked the film or not. If it was good, I didn't care if some rich dude in Hollywood made his money back or not.
Why is this important? I'm not asking in a derogatory way, I'm honestly curious. Does it matter how much money it makes?
I mean, the actors got paid. The director got paid. The screenwriter got paid. The editor got paid. The crew got paid. The caterers etc got paid. All the people who are supposed to get paid got paid.
Isn't that important? When we're talking about the profit of the film it is only about whether the producers (who I absolutely don't care about) got a return on their investment or not.
If you reframe the question in that manner- 'Did the producers make a big profit?' does it change the nature of what you want to know at all?
