I don't know what you mean by "going full retard" with regards to this movie. But the main character was definitely retarded in his development. lol

Basically this movie was attempting to be oscar bait.
You can win oscars by portraying people with learning difficulties but only if those learning difficulties arw palatable to audiences. This movie is literally unappealing and unwatchable more than once.
