Director and screenwriters did NOT explain much?
1. why did the King have to go kill the sea beast by himself?
2. why did the Queen turn into that beast....she could kill the boy with her own hands
3. How did the old sister turn young, after being suckled by the witch?
4. Where was the Boy King after the death of his mother?
The stories dont really intertwine apart from being in neighbouring kingdoms

1. Because He was the king and thats what kings usually do in movies. It was part of a spell anyways so the mage could have asked the king to kill the beast in order to make the spell works.
2. She couldnt kill him the first time she tried, maybe she didn't know she was going to become that beast. Maybe she just asked the mage to help her kill the boy. She becomes the beast as a side effect of what she wished for.

I think people miss the point with this movie. The movie is a fairy tale. Fairy tale don't have explanations, they just happen and they have a moral message.
You don't need explanations, just go with the movie and enjoy it for what it is.
