Das letzte Schweigen from 2010, I personally liked that even more.

Red Riding Trilogy, Memories of Murder, The Secret in Their Eyes, On the Job. These are the only ones I can think of right now.

Thanks! I am familiar with the Red Riding trilogy (haven't seen anything quite as bleak..), but I'll check out the rest.

Everyone else's recommendations are spot on. I'd also add True Detective [the HBO Series], it reminded me a lot of this for sure. Also perhaps Black House

If you haven't already, check out David Fincher's Zodiac. And the fantastic Turkish film Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.

Definitely Das letzte Schweigen (The Silence). I don't think it's a better movie, but it has a similar feel to it.
