The mechanics of doing heroin?

Maybe someone out there would know this but...

I know you can build up a tolerance to opiates just like alcohol so when they say someone is 4 times the legal limit, that may be so but for them its like they're just getting started. Could that be the same for how they're describing the heroin dosage in this movie? Could that have been a regular amount for Cobain?

Also, if you do heroin a lot I would think you'd have a really good idea of how much is too much? I'm curious if someone could discern that even if someone else was shooting them up. Like, whoa dude you tryin to kill me??!! I'd think you'd have that ability but I don't know? Obviously being messed up already might impact that.

And finally when shooting up would it be common to shoot up more than once at a time? Because the spoon can only hold so much, the syringe can only hold so much ect. To do a lot would you have to shoot up multiple times?

I'm just curious if anyone knows because I don't and i realize people do OD but from just the mechanics of it how aware of that is a heroin user, i'd think they have to be on some level right? And I'm also curious what this dosage would actually do to an experienced user? Or is this just like someone saying, He drank 23 beers! Which might sound like a S-ton but really isn't for some people.

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

I have no idea where they get the 3x lethal dose figure from. The lethal dose is different depending on who you ask. I can't find anything that states the standard considered lethal dose. This is interesting though:

It's really hard to figure our the tolerance of an individual and that's the problem. I've heard some addicts say the amount he injected wouldn't have knocked him out, other say it would. The only way to really to study the tolerance of an individual is to sit and watch them shoot up and that's never going to happen.

Here's a few Reddit discussions about it which you might find interesting. Not sure how much it will help though:

Also, people usually OD because they have mixed heroin with other drugs or alcohol or they have started using again after a period of sobriety. There's many different factors.

Sorry I can't be more help. I have no experience in heroin addiction. My sister had two friends who were addicts, both dead. One killed himself walking into the path of a bus.
