There were things about this movie that could have been better conceived, that was one.
He must have been an assassin "superkiller" that had not been in the field or at the gym in a long time.
It seemed like the way they tried to 'sell it', is that the assassin (Pierce) was getting older and nearing end of his long career, thus maybe wasn't as fast or strong as he once was.
