would the exploding ball really have killed 'millions of people'? I think the times square blast was supposed to be 4 times as powerful as the London test. But even so, it didn't seem like such a huge threat given that the ball was suspended so high above the crowd. Did I miss something?

Not the worst thing about the movie, but it does make the whole thing very, very pointless feeling. "OMG, I must stop him before he makes a minor explosion far from a bunch of drunks who will probably mistake it for the fireworks show."
I presumed he was going to shoot the ball when it got to ground level - where thousands of people would be lined - but he had to try and shoot it before it dropped down, because hero girl Jovovich was trying to stop him.
The really unrealistic thing was the stupid "coolant" needed for the ball. The ball would never have, or need coolant. And if it did, coolant doesn't just need replaced. Furthermore, they wouldn't do it the night of the drop, minutes before. They would've done it days before.

The ball never gets to the ground level during the new years eve celebration. The pole it travels down is attached to the top of the building and the ball travels from the top of the pole to the surface of the building's roof during the sixty second countdown. The closest the ball gets to the crowd at the bottom is the height of one times square which is 120 metres.

shareWhat little i got out of this movie, they would be doing this to make more money in the NY Stock market. They figured if they were successful, the stock market would go down, like it did on 9/11, and they would buy all those stocks that dropped and know that they would go up. BTW, the leader who argued with Brosnan about getting half of the millions they would make, is still alive for another job. LOL
