Was I the only one who got the impression...

...that Annie had gotten "It" from Jeff/Hugh or from somewhere down his chain?

I was still getting settled when the movie started, so maybe I missed something, and please feel free to correct me. But Jeff had seemed pretty carefree and not at all paranoid during the initial date with Jay. I sincerely felt as though he didn't think he needed to look out for "It." It wasn't until he just happened to see the girl in yellow that suddenly the paranoia set in. So my brain immediately thought that Annie had gotten it from him and now that she was dead, it was coming for him again.

Now, it would raise questions as to why he was still in that gross house if he thought he was safe and so on and so forth, but I just didn't quite understand the transition between the opening sequence and the movie if there's meant to be only one "It."

Or maybe this was explicitly stated or contradicted by the movie and I completely missed it. Someone help a girl out?

He made mentioned that he got "it" from an encounter with a random girl in a bar. Possibly the opening scene was really an epilogue to the events of the film

I couldn't believe when I read his filmography that he played a toilet (no joke) in According to Jim

I also think he gave it to Annie. He didn't seem to think it was following him until he saw the girl in the yellow dress so he definitely passed it to someone before Jay.

Oh my goodness....I am really lost now. I understand what you all are saying but I don't think I paid close enough attention at the beginning of the movie. I'm definitely going to have to watch it again.

Hugh got it from 'some girl at a bar' during a one night stand, and then Hugh passed it on to Annie. (There was a high school photo of Hugh with his then girlfriend that looked suspiciously like Annie)
When Annie died it passed back to Hugh.
