Does this film still holds up after the initial hype died down?

Now that the hype has died down and things have sort of settled in two years later and probably after seeing it multiple times. How would you rate the movie? Do you like it more or less, how has it aged in your opinion?

One of the greatest horror movies in the past 10 years. There, I've said it!

Handsomely shot, and it feels more like mythic parable rather than run-of-the-mill horror, and that's why I think it will stand the test of time. The "It" threat can change depending on the age.
Some may feel the director was being pretentious in refusing to identify what "It" exactly is, but I think it works better that way. It would be like forcing Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke to identify every symbol in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The mystery surrounding certain scenes (and various interpretations) makes it live far longer than had the "It" been a typical boogeyman curse.

By keeping a certain vagueness to it, our minds start to wonder if "It" is something of our own fault (statement on society? our warped collective psychology? is it about sex/promiscuity or something far beyond that?)

Watched it for the first time in over a year and found it utterly fascinating all over again. 9/10

A modern day classic!

I re-watched it recently and honestly, not really.

It Follows is a great example of what a high concept movie should be. The idea is instantly intriguing and makes you wonder about all the possible scenarios that an "STD curse" could lead to. But the execution was just ok.

I think the director tried a little too hard to make it arthouse. The lines are sort of delivered semi mumble core style, there's a lot of scenes that move in slow motion while ominous music plays, and then there's the ambiguous retro futuristic aesthetic. It all felt very creepy the first time I watched it, but by the third time the movie just seemed to have a very slow pace.

And the only intelligent character in the whole movie is Hugh. The rest of them make really stupid decisions. They know that It is after the girl and they decide to just lounge around on the beach where it's wide open and It can come from any direction. They create a shitty plan to kill It, their plan fails, and that's it. They just sort of decide that now they can go back to their regular lives. Jay, that selfish cunt, passes the curse on to Paul, despite the fact that they had already tried that with Greg and got him killed. So they pass it on to one freaking prostitute and that's it? Are they stupid enough to think that a totally unsuspecting prostitute and her clients aren't gonna get killed right away? And they could have done that after like the first 30 minutes of the movie. Most of the movie is them literally getting nothing done.

The movie wasn't bad at all. It was more original and creepy than like 75-90% of modern horror movies, but originality is the main thing it has going for it. The characters aren't particularly interesting. The dialogue isn't particularly smart or funny. Honestly, most of the dialogue is just filler. You could watch the movie on mute and still get most of the story. And the movie has no actual resolution.

I think a sequel with a diff writer could easily be way better.

The movie plays out like a nightmare . The kind you can't wake up from, no matter how hard you try.
There's not a lot of logic in nightmares , like this movie

Agreed. This is one I can watch multiple time and it will still get me. Bailey Spry is awesome. As is the cinematography and everything else. Rebirth of the genre, if you ask me (but nobody is, lol!)

That's kind of a cop out though. Does that mean that you can make your characters act as stupid as you like as long as you make the atmosphere surreal and creepy and nightmare-like?

In a dream, anythings possible.

Either you buy into this movies concept or move on.

Yeah. 7 years later and it's still great.

In that 7 years I feel like there have only been a handful of Horror films that have reached a similar level.

It's arguably one of the greatest Horror films of all time.

I just watched it again last night and it still holds up - it’s pretty disturbing throughout.
