Okay, that singer that everyone wants....

I heard Luscious say that's some true soul singing, and I'm like WTF? Girl needs to sit down, because there are plenty of chicks who can really bring it home.

It's just a joke to see all of these people vying to sign her.

I agree. It's weird. It seems like music producers of today have no clue what soul music is.

The show can't always be taking literally. In situations like this I am glad I am readily able to suspend belief. I immediately got what the Director was trying to convey. At that very moment the singer was being compared to Andre's wife and this comparison was the setup to Andre picking the girl as a rebound. Sure they could've hired someone with an earthy, soulful voice, but shows like this must balance appealing to the masses. They had the actress they wanted for the part even if it means sacrificing on the music side.

reply

Somehow I think if they wanted an attractive actress who could actually sing soul, it wouldn't have been that difficult. But whatever. It's just a TV show

I so agree. There is no shortage of double threats, pretty blacks chicks who have a soulful voice and can act.

I think she has a great voice, what are all you talking about? She kinda reminds me of a modern day whitney houston that her voice is soulful buts its the uniqu soulful that can be mainstream and not too churchy.

It's subjective.

You are right. She has a great voice and seems a nice person. More importantly, she and Andre have great chemistry together and I am hoping that they will make them into a hot item. They seem to have a lot in common and it appears that she admires Andre and listens to him.

I can't wait to see the fireworks that will fly when Hakeem finds out let alone her brother Shine.

I am so excited about Andre and Nessa together. With her voice and singing talent, they have a great chance to take over Empire.

Their chemistry is everything but Im worried about her brother interfering. HE is crazy as hell and I just got this feeling that either andre or her may get hurt.

That's what great drama is all about. The anticipation of what will happen next, the intrigue, the tension, the challenge, e.t.c. is what sets up a good story. People are worried because they can see what trouble lies ahead with Andre hooking up with Nessa, and are anxious to find out what happens at the end which will keep them watching.

If this whole set-up between Andre and Nessa was nice and worry-free, then it will be boring just like it was with Andre and Rhonda. With Nessa, you can see a whole bunch of intriguing storylines where they can take Andre.

There was really not much they could do with Rhonda and Andre. They couldn't take over Empire because Lucious never did like Rhonda; Rhonda wasn't a singer who could sign a deal with Empire and she wasn't a song-writer either. Remember Andre was always feeing left out and under-appreciated because he wasn't an artist so now with Nessa, he sees an opportunity at least IMO.

I am not worried but excited to see what happens next.

When I think of a great singer, I'm not thinking churchy. When Luscious mentioned a black girl w/soul, I had a different picture in my mind.

The sound I was expecting was an India Ari or that she would come out singing like Sharon Irving, young and mature all at the same time. I don't know, but Nessa's voice does nothing for me. So, it makes it hard for me to get into the story.

Here's more in line what I think she should sound like:

That woman sounds churchy, same black church lady voice. Nessa's like I said is a unique soulful like how whitney houston was. Whitney houston had that soulful voice but you could do so much with it that it could be mainstream and still stay soulful and powerful.

reply

That girl is beautiful and has a great voice. The 'soulfulness' aspect of it was a bit underwhelming, mostly because he talked it up so much. But she's gorgeous. I love her hair. And she's very talented. I enjoyed her version of Jamal's song.

reply

^again she has unique soulfulness to her voice, where its not too churchy but just right to go mainstream if need be. I love her voice.

reply

Whitney was churchy. If you're from the church and you sing in church then you're churchy.

However, churchy doesn't mean you can't have range and take it to another level.

A fair amount of black vocalists...male and female received their training from singing in the choir. In fact, that's the best training one can have. Black church choirs don't mess around.

reply

She has a nice voice, but a lot of people have nice voices...a lot.

This show isn't at the vanguard of music, never has been, and never really tries to be. This is, by far, one of the smallest quality stretches they've had (the music is at its highest level, so far, with the addition of Jerkins), but yeah it's not any more believable that a bidding war would be done over a person who's essentially sung one hook and filled in in a live performance. If that's all it took to get a bidding war, half the contestants on reality music shows would be in her spot.

Empire look like they trying to go with today music industry. I was hoping this show would be different and cater to some real R&B not to stuff you get tired of hearing on the radio.

reply

@bla: A mixture would have been nice.

She sounds a lot like Brandy and i think she can sing soul.

reply

Yeah that kinda took me out of the show. They might want to sign her because she's okay but not some kind of evil bidding war. She's not worth that. Men in that position would know how interchangeable pop singers are.
