What are they doing with Jamal character???

Im so sick of seeing this man struggle with different men each season, I mean finally put him in a solid relationship for awhile like he had with michael and give better storyline than this OD crap. His storyline is the only storyline im not feeling this season at all but everything else is really good.

Or let him explore other women like he did with Alicia Keys' character.

What a dumb idea!...

reply

Well, what do u have in mind?

reply

Everyone, except Jamal, is in a "heterosexual relationship". I don't see the point of adding one more. Anyway, did you forget Jamal is gay?

reply

No, but why not explore with a woman again? That was actually more exciting than seeing him jump from guy to guy.

reply

So it would be more exciting to see him jump from a woman to another? That's a pretty heterocentric (or homophobic) point of view...

Uhhmm, no!

Couldn't disagree more to be honest. I'm loving his storyline this season, its certainly not the worst that title goes to hakeem and his character regression back to being his season one self of childish and obsessing over girls who aren't even his LOL.

Back to Jamal. I don't see an issue with exploring relationships for a while. The only relationship he had after Michael was with that black dude in season 1 whose name I can't remember LOL. I like that they are now exploring his relationship with DMajor and adding Phillip into the mix will cause great drama and conflict especially with him being Jamal's therapist. As you pointed out they already explored the settled Jamal through his relationship with Michael. His relationship with Michael is also playing a part in his unwillgness to settle down now I think. He thought he found the love of his life in Michael and Michael Hurt him not once but twice. The first time when he ditched Jamal and broke up with him in season one and then after he cheated on Jamal with creepy photographer in season 2 after Jamal for whatever reason forgave him and took him back. The kind of pain and betrayal that Jamal suffered at the hands of Michael has obviously changed his feelings and approaches to relationships. Which is a natural thing to happen when you are hurt by one you loved so badly. He is obviously reluctant to get serious with anyone again with the fear that they will hurt him again, so him bouncing between guys is understandable. Also Jamal is not the only character who jumps from one relationship to another unable to settle down its something that happens to ALL the characters. Cookie usually hooks up with a different guy every season while battling her lingering love for luscious. Luscious does the same, hakeem usually hooks up with multiple woman in a season and even is apparently in love with more than one at the same time aka Tiana and Nessa.

The only character who has maintained a stable relationship through seasons is Andre of course now that Rhonda is dead I can see Andre eventually going through the same thing if he and Nessa don't work out long term. There's nothing wrong with not settling down you don't just immediately fall in love and settle down that's not realistic to life. I mean some lucky people do find their soul mate quickly and settle down but for most people its not like that. Some people go on hundreds of dates and relationships in their quest to find love just look at Taylor Swift ;) Love is a complex thing and in order to find the one for you, you have to get out there and explore relationships with people it's just common sense. I don't expect Jamal to get back with Michael after all the pain Michael has caused him so he is trying to find someone new who has not broken his heart into a million pieces. It's natural and not something to be looked down on also it creates great entertainment which is why people watch tv to be entertained.

Now onto his current storyline as I said I'm loving it. This exploration of drug addiction is not a bad direction to take for Jamal's character. That's the terrifying thing about drug addiction is that it can strike good people who've never done drugs before and it can ruin and end lives so quickly. Very few people who end up addicted to drugs started out as the type of people you would imagine would become addicted, it can strike anyone.

It's also I feel a natural progression from his storyline in season 2. He suffered from something traumatic. Nearly dying at the hand of someone he trusted and considered a friend really messed him up as it should. He is now in not only physical but emotional pain. He needed the drugs to ease his physical and emotional pain and when you are in a situation like that when you are constantly in pain from a physical one like an injury or emotional one and you have to rely on medication in order to just function and get better it is very easy to become dependant on the pain relief and get addicted without meaning to. No one intends to become a junkie it just happens and can happen to anyone. This storyline with Jamal makes perfect sense based on the trauma he suffered at Freda's hands also luscious and his evil tricks are not helping matters for Jamal's recovery.

I guess it's just about what you enjoy more on the show. Personally I'm kind of bored by this Andre storyline. I feel like I'm watching the birth of Lusciois junior who is violent and manipulative and has no trouble hurting the ones he loved to get what he wants. It's making Andre very unlikable to be honest. I've always hated luscious and now I'm beginning to hate Andre as he becomes luscious. Also andre's manipulations are only further hurting jamal and his issues so Andre is playing a part in jamals issues. Though it is fun to watch someone get the upper hand against luscious for once I feel they are destroying Andre's character in the process which I don't like.

Exactly, and the fact that the writers are delving into major issues affecting people is what has really impressed me about this season so far. Enough with Jamal and his one love Michael who betrayed him over and over and enough of Jamal singing too much. Now they are delving into a very concrete storyline with him. It's refreshing, a progressive storyline for him from last season and very deep. This is a subject matter that is important to touch on. I love it.

Quite the contrary with me. I am absolutely loving Andre this season and I feel the writers have rejuvenated that character from plain and boring through S1 and S2 to exciting in S3. Andre is killing it this season. I love this BAD Andre.

Andre's relationship with Rhonda was OK to me but as a couple, they didn't have exciting things going on besides her advising him to turn against his brothers to earn the Empire throne and their unique sexual escapades outside of their marriage. His bipolar illness was the main focus in S1 and S2 and that seemed to have stalled his character's progression. The writers needed to re-vamp that character in order for Andre to grow and I think they have done an exceedingly good job.

I was sick and tired of Andre being nice and following the rules, pleading for his father's love and getting rejected all the time. Despite all that, he always seemed to come in last. It is much more exciting IMO to see him become more like a Lyon, which is expected. He was the first born and grew up in the ghettos with his Dad. If anyone of the sons experienced a rough childhood, it was Andre so it is only fitting for him to go down that path than keep being "Mr. Nice guy".
I love his relationship with Nessa and if the writers keep this up, I'm sure this season will be absolutely fantastic!!!!

There's no such thing as "solid relationships" in soap operas. All m ain characters struggle all the time. It's the law.

reply

IKR. I started to see Empire literally only because of Jamal's storyline. But now I skipped every scene invovling his story. This PTSD plot is NOT interesting at all.

reply

It's a dull story and now we're going to have a triangle...

reply

This 'triangle' crap came out of nowhere. At least with Michael, you can see the evolvement of their relationship. Now it's just some random dude pops out and sleeps with him.

reply

What are they doing with Jamal?

What the phuch are they doing to Andre's character?! I'm so mad about that...total character assassination! Not feeling it at all.

reply

That;s not character assassination, Andre's been trying to betray and undermine the company from day one. Re-watch season 1.

reply

I know what I watched. They moved away from that whereas Lucious stopped treating Andre like he had no value because he wasn't an artist and he suffered from bipolar.

Andre was moving in a positive direction.

reply

This is the most interesting andre has ever been. I never noticed him before but now he is all I see, LOL.

reply

Andre SEEMED to be moving into a positive direction. But apparently that was a ruse to gain Lusious' trust. Andre is still a Lyon. Look at who raised him. Look at who's approval he's seeking.

this is a messed up family and a soap opera. If there is any redemption it will ony last until the next twist.

I don't need any of them tbe heroic, I just need them to be entertaining. Bad Andre is more entertaining than the good, tortured Andre.

reply

I actually find his storyline to be the most interesting. He isn't dealing with boring relationship drama.
