I'm surprised it hasn't been called out. Every leading role on this show is filled with lightskinned actors while all the secondary characters are played by darksinned actors.
I'm also surprised that Lee Daniels, a brown skinned black man, continues to perpetuate such colorism.
Really? I've seen a ton of Black women her color growing up...Taraji actually reminds me a bit of my grandmother (when she was much younger, of course). Similar complexion and looks. She never considered herself or was considered light-skinned. I guess it just depends on people's opinion, though.
I get your point about there not being darker-skinned actors as lead characters, though, besides Gabby. Maybe that will change in the upcoming season. Taye Diggs is playing a prominent new political leader called Angelo Dubois and I think Cookie's love interest.
If that's what you see then perhaps you have an issue with color. You know, people can really talk themselves into believing there's an issue or problem when there isn't.
Last time I checked, black people come in many shades...all beautiful.
Try moving past the light skinned black versus the dark skinned black. It's really old and serves no purpose except to continue to divide black people in general.
SIGH... you know, Wesley Snipes was almost hired to play Lucious, right? How dark do you need these people to be in order to "qualify" as black? What? They not black enough? Is that not a form of colorism?
Terence is a fair complexioned black person. Taraj is caramel complexioned to Mocha. do you really think they would have dark chocolate babies? And what about that new singer who is dating Dre? She's a chocolate sister and she is considered a "beauty" that the men are fighting over.
I think this post of yours is overreaching and ridiculous.
The statement below is false. The statement above is true.
Leslie is hardly light. By the way, they can't always match the tone of a younger version character to the older version. It's based upon who is better for the part when casting a role.
Stop getting caught up in the bullsh*it with black people and skin tone.
@j-: Yea I noticed from the start of the show that all the main characters are light skinned. Sad, but there are other shows were mainly a dark skinned black guy is playing the main character.
iheart: You're right. But are we really still talking about "shades of black" in this day and age? Black is Black! No matter the shade. We should be celebrating all the different hues of Black Beauty in film and television. CELEBRATING!!!
Those actors... male and female that came before endured so much for us to be where we are today. And yes, the struggle still rages on. But look how far we've come. And all we can talk about is...s/he ain't black enough, dark enough, too light, hair is too kinky, not straight enough. How about ENOUGH already!
I have cousins in England...across the pond that are in awe at all the beautiful black faces they see on American television when they come to visit. Can you believe that? Progressive United Kingdom, England still have way less black people representing people of color in film and television. You can count on one hand. Go figure?

Actors are useless without the power of a good writer's imagination
