Edward g robinson named names

I did some research and found out that edward g robinson did not name any names. Why would this movie say that about this great actor when it wasn't
true.I know a movie has to change some things to make it more interesting but to do that to a man is not right.

I'm confused about that too. I haven't found any source that says he gave up anybody. They say he was basically a pawn.

reply

Yeah, it's pretty outrageous.

Turns out he did:

He didn't name names because he was never a Communist, He gave a fortune to war relief charities and tried to enlist. He was turned down because he was 48 years old. But in London he used the fact that he spoke seven languages to make broadcasts for the allies to Nazi occupied countries. He entertained the army in Normandy one month after the invasion. He gave $100,000 to the USO, This is the equivalent of $1,500,000 in today's money. He was also given an award by the American Legion for his efforts.

Of 850 charities to which he gave money, the FBI alledged 11 were used by Communists as fronts. That was enough to give super patriots the opening to attack him as a liberal Democrat. He did write an article for the American Legion magazine admitting he had been duped a few times. The Chairman of the House on Un-American Activities admitted they never found any evidence that he did anything wrong.

His wife divorced him and he had to sell a tremendous art collection to pay her as a divorce settlement.

Another casualty of phony patriotism.

Did you read the link I posted?

So, what.

He did not name anyone as a Communist. He did admit to having been persuaded or duped into donating money or lending his name by others to a few organizations later listed as fronts by Communists. He did name those people.

In WWII Russia was our ally and the public was told to support them since they were doing most of the land fighting and dying until after the Normandy Invasion in 1944.

Elia Kazan, on the other hand, outted his friends and co workers as Communists. Most like he had quit years before when Stalin revealed himself by signing the devil's pact with Adolph Hitler.

This is why when Kazan received an honorary Oscar in 1999, many refused to take part or applaud and there were 250 pickets outside.

Don't have the transcripts so can't say for sure but Robinson could have named names without stating they were communists. Robinson gave aid to over 800 organizations during WWII (very admirable) of which the FBI found about a dozen of which were communist fronts. Robinson stated he was unaware of this and was duped. Given the large number of organizations it is very plausible that Robinson did not know about these few.

What he has to do is, when asked, provide the name of the person from xyz organization (one of the communist fronts) who asked him to host a gathering, give a speech, or write a check. To provide that information is not to say John Doe is a communist but that John Doe of that organization you identified asked me to host a gathering or for a donation or do whatever. Again, I did not know they were communists, I was duped.

Oh, I thought he did name names. Why did he look sad at times.
