The movie makes an attempt to not be obviously pro-communist and appear to be making a message more in support of the First Amendment, but you really don't have to stretch far to find clear pro-communist undertones.

To paraphrase Preminger and Trumbo: I think there is a story in Trumbo's life. They just needed someone like Trumbo to find/write it.

This film is about one's right to one's freedom of thought, of belief, of conviction. It is about the persecution of those who are different from us, from the Salem WItch Hunt to McCarthyism. It seems to be a confusing issue for many even till today. Don't you get it?
