Summer finale?

Usually a show will say it is having a season finale. Does this mean the new season will air much sooner than otherwise expected (this fall)?

This season will have 24 episodes that they're dividing into season 2a and 2b. MTV does this format for several of their shows.

MTV has picked up “Finding Carter” for 12 more episodes set to premiere later this year, the Viacom-owned network announced Monday.

The article states "later this year" but not an exact return date.
