Second Season seems to have lost it's punch!

Not sure if it's because of high quality of other shows I'm watching, but even though I initially loved this show I'm finding that it seems to have devolved into an almost typical teen family drama and not a very good one at that.

Yeah, it kinda seems like one of those shows on ABC Family. It was a cool concept to begin with, but has been poorly executed. I think a better story would've been to have Carter be an average child instead of a rebel tough girl and to see how she deals with daily life instead of this silly thing with all these lies and secrets. Shows based on a bunch of hints to the viewer about mysteries and lies don't tend to have very long lives. You just can't keep that going for very long. There has to be more to it to keep the audience interested.

But I'm still watching. For now.

Pretty Little Liars would disagree.

Yeah, this episode was boring. Once again Carter took the spotlight from Taylor, Taylor overreacted, said something hurtful to Carter and then apologized. Elisabeth and David are separating, Taylor and Max will probably make up and break up once per episode, Elisabeth is angry at Crash - same old, same old. Only thing that's different from season 1 is the fact that Lori is imprisoned, everything else is just the same.

It seems like they are trying too hard.
Crash coming back was not needed (nor believable)
Lori being the bio mom takes some of the crazy out of the situation
Everyone still fawning over Carter is ridiculous at this point
Max seems out of sorts and trusting crash seems out of character

I don't mind that they add some teen elements but it seems like they torpedoed the initial concept of the show by adding this bio mom crap.

I wish we could like comments on here.

At this point they seem to just be throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. They don't know what they're doing with this show. I may bow out soon.

Yea the backhalf of season 1 was great. But they took a million steps back for me so far. The only thing I'm looking forward to is Taylor and Grant's inevitable meltdowns because those could be great story wise.

Lori being the egg donor does not change the fact that the show is about a 16 year old girl who finds out that her "mom" abducted her at 3 years old and her facing the adjustment of going to live with a family she does not know. Lori having a reason for what she did does not mean it was justified.

reply

I did say it was justified but it seems contrary to stuff we learned in season 1. Probably because a lot of what we are learning does not mesh with season 1 at all.

Max forgiving Crash for getting shot by him is not something out of character. The guy is very forgiving about everything and a nice guy overall; and the story he told Taylor about his mom being attacked by his own father was the reason (lampshaded in that very episode) Max forgave Crash, especially since Crash was genuinely repentant about the shooting.

It's not something out of character. It's called character development; for both Max and Crash.

I'm not gonna argue about the other topics in your post, though.

What's happened to this show, is exactly what I was afraid of would happen: The plot of the series isn't series material and more like movie material and therefore is not enough to make an entire series out of it so it'll have to go off the initial plot, it hasn't done so completely but for the most part it has and if there is a next season, the complete kidnapping plot will be non existent, kinda like the whole Switched At Birth plot is on that show

Have to give the writers credit for not dragging out things for multiple seasons though, like on the Blacklist for example. I never really thought the show was going to be soley about Carter being kidnapped, the hunt for Lori, multiple seasons before the truth was revealed about the why of the kidnapping etc. The show has spent a little too much time already with some of the friends of Carter and developing story lines (Crash's redemption, Bird's FBI raid) that are not working for me at least. However, the scenes with the family do work. There might not be enough story for the show to run for 6 seasons, but I cant agree that there is not enough material for it to be a series that runs for 3 seasons/36 episodes.

reply

Yeah I can see 3 seasons but nothing more than that or it'll be like Switched at birth which seems to be phoning it in for the most part this season

reply

So agree, both of these shows started off with great premises - then quickly got rid of that main premise and failed to realize these things are what kept them unique from other shows - then just spiraled into the same teen drama crap. It's disappointing.

reply

To be fair , it rings true for all the current teen drama on TV. "The Fosters" also seems to be drivting to nowhere ...
