The alcohol

What kind of teenagers drink this much and get away with it constantly, and who is provision this alcohol? I get that Bird was rich but that doesn't mean she can easily cop booze.
And I'm only 29- my friends in high school never drank that much. Hell, I don't drink that much in my life now! Another example of poor writing. They can't come up with any other activities for the teens to do.

I'm 22 and drink like this, have been since I was 16.
Not proud, but it IS what teenagers and young adults do.
And I'm in school and I'm a shift manager at a coffee shop.
On my free time, I go out and enjoy life.
It's very easy to get alcohol at a young age. Fake ID's, older friends/siblings, getting random people in the street to do it for you, some places don't even ID you. Parents!

reply

I'm well aware of the access of alcohol via fakes, older friends, and bums on the street. However these kids are drinking too of the line tequila & vodka in EVERY episode. Not only that but the parents know and seem to not give a *beep* At least on Gossip Girl they were rich socialites whose parents gave them martinis after school- it's explained
This show is ridiculous with it. By the way at age 22 I was drinking all day everyday. During before and after school/work. Don't worry about not be proud. Soon your body will decide how much you can drink. That'll sneak up on you before you even realize it.

I'm just watching the premiere of season 3 where FINALLY they get fake IDs! But still...

Aside from Bird spreading it for anything with a penis? That chick is easier than duck hunt. I mean she JUST met Ben and she's all on it. Also, didn't her parents finally come back or did they leave again? They must have an endless supply of booze in that house because they're always drinking. I get the "high school party" mentality but Jesus. I think Taylor is the only one that actually does any kind of schoolwork. I think most episodes are just of them partying.

Yup...typical MTV writing.

reply

It's actually super easy to get drinks underage.. And I know tons of people who party every weekend in high school.

reply

I think they write for the audience they expect to watch the show. Pre-tweens that think it's cool to drink and who hope to be contestants on Teen Mom one day. Your right to think that the writers are out of touch with reality but there wouldn't be much of an audience for a show that portrays children as obese blobs sitting in front of a videot game screen all night with occasional timeouts to visit the Hub... As long as MTV's major sponsors are Clearisal and Trojan, you can expect this kind of story.

reply

I totally agree

Why is it a big deal when women are willing to have sex but not when men are, which is literally all the time? It takes two to tango? Wtf is this logic even

As for the OP, I don't know if you watch any other teen shows, but most of them are pretty much like this so it's not exactly a new thing. High schoolers do drink but they are more likely to be getting high than drinking so much.

We can watch the world devoured in its pain

If your really interested in an answer to that question, you might try to take historical context and biology into the equation. Add into the mix the relatively new (last 150 years) movement to "raise" Women to the level of Men. (It really lowers Women to the level of the "dog" that defines most Males).
Women who engage in promiscuous behaviour are called tramps by folks of a certain age because believe it or not, they believe sex should only be enjoyed by married couples who mate for life. (Thus the tradition of the White wedding dress, that symbolizes virginity.) In today's culture people like Kim Kardashian wear white dresses to their weddings! LOL
Your question has merit but is way too complex to be answered in this forum.
I encourage you to ask the question to a variety of people of different ages and backgrounds and be willing to listen to their answer and accept it for being "their truth", then develop your own moral compass and follow it's direction with courage.

I consumed a lot more pot than alcohol in high school, and that continued into college. All of that would have caused problems if the right (or wrong) people had discovered that.
Some of the people who attended my private school were attending because of being busted. They were sent to get them away from bad influences, but they just traded one influence for another.

I understand were you are coming from, but many teenagers do live like this.

I think is completely normal the amount of alcohol they drink. I used to drink every weekend during high school through university. Not saying its ok, but it is normal and it is what most kids do.

My mom was ok with it, as long as I was responsible. It depends how down to earth your parents are- as long as you don't drink and drive, you do not get absolutely wasted, and you do it around people that would be there for you when you do then... you know what at least you will learn how to hold your drink by the time you can legally do it.

I never saw this as an issue, in fact I think is sometimes the most realistic thing on this show.

I love this show btw, I am not worried about how realistic the situations are to be honest if they were being 100% real, every teenager would be on their phones or laptops 24/7.

and the Bird comment below, just get a life. If she wants to sleep around then she can!!

Lexi-guiot,

which Bird comment are you referring to? "Below" is not a very clear direction.

It's the parents' fault! Or lack of. It's apparent you don't understand the show you're watching.

Some people with disorders self-medicate. Yes, THESE teenagers are boozing it up under the guise of partying but they don't understand themselves. None of the ones featured have strong parental guidance or support and they're all enduring considerable trauma. They are all using alcohol, drugs, and sex to mask their pain and insecurities -- to make themselves feel better. Other than Taylor, Gabe, and the other college-bound kid, they haven't been taught other ways. And they're getting advice and emotional support from the most screwed up one, Carter == their de facto leader.

Where are Bird's parents? She's practically abandoned. Yes, she had money. But what is money for a 15 year old without any foundation? No one who's said "I love you" or anything else remotely positive. [They were 15 when the series started.] Then her parents were imprisoned for [I don't remember: Tax evasion? Embezzlement?]

Gabe had an emotionally supportive father. But his father was also devoted to his job and preoccupied with his married partner. Gabe, out of all of them, has the most sense due to his father's love. Yet his father was recently murdered. Don't remember his mother's story. Gabe's undergoing prolonged grief.

I don't remember Crash's story. But he had no parents either and was influenced by shady characters all his life. Fortunately for him, and with Elizabeth's help, he's gotten himself together. Unfortunately for him, he's drawn back into a mess by the toxic magnet named Carter.

Max's mother was a witless, spineless, child parent. His father was abusive and spent a large part of Max's life imprisoned. Considering his life, he's fairly wonderful. He's not the brightest bulb though.

What is Lori's psychological diagnosis? Do you think she's fit to be anybody's parent? Not to the child she kidnapped. And especially not to the child she lost to State -- Ben.

Who's left? Taylor and Carter. Taylor's life was shaped from the twin sister who was taken. Her parents already had problems then the kidnapping sent their lives into permanent turmoil. Can you even imagine what that would be like? Yet Taylor doesn't drink often. She's fairly level.

Carter on the other hand, at age 15 learned her birth name was Lyndon. Learned the woman she loves and calls "mommie" stole her. Is returned to her rightful home but it's all rigid, cold, and full of deception - a stark contrast to her kidnapper's lifestyle who was all fun and games.

The answer to your question: F'd up people like to get f'd up. And there's always a way to obtain drugs and alcohol. Cute kids often don't need money or fake ID.
