Bad writing is why this show failed.

Mostly due to the characterization of Richie. The writers made the fatal mistake of coloring the protagonist much too dark. He didn't have a single redeeming quality. He was a complete scumbag who screwed everybody over and as the main protagonist how could you root for the guy? How could you possibly hope that he would save the company with his back-stabbing antics. Dude had a drug problem, OK I can take that. But then outta the blue he has a gambling problem as well? Then after losing all of the companies money he frames his buddy for it. Naw, man. I couldn't get behind him after that. I just wanted the mob to off him. Sure he had a great ear for music but that wasn't enough to win the audience over IMO. It's too bad because I really liked a lot of things about the show especially the music but the protagonist being such a sh!t really made me not like the show.

Personally, I think it was the other shows it went up against and the new programming director didn't want to take a chance on it because of the cost.

The ratings were steadily rising, but it was too expensive in his mind to keep it going.

It's a shame too cuz it was renewed for the second season before he took over. I really liked the show...especially the
music.

I agree. And the murder was ridiculous. They turned it into a murder mystery instead of concentrating on the story of the music.

And Richie was a scumbag. Bad enough that he treated his family so bad, but to make someone who was supposed to be his friend and partner the fall guy when he lost all that money was the last straw. You had a good idea, kill him off and then get on with the story of the music! Lol and they could have written it that he had an insurance policy that would have saved the company.
