when did Grindelwaald take Graves body?

Was he really Graves the entire time? I assumed that was the case when I watched it the first time, but he could of taken / copied him at any point.

It’s never really made clear exactly when he took over. However, when “Graves” interrogates Newt and Tina, you can tell it is Grindelwald seeing how the pendant he gives Credence, the symbol of the deathly hollows, is visible in his jacket pocket. And you can bet his actions in that scene were perhaps uncharacteristic of the real Graves.

Moreover, J.K. Rowling said that Grindelwald used transfiguration to turn into Graves (he didn’t need the polyjuice potion), and if his hairstyle is anything to go by, then it’s possible Grindelwald was Graves the whole time. That does beg the question: what happened to the real Graves? I assume he was either killed or kept somewhere in captivity.

Was there ever a real "Graves"?

Some are convinced there never was. I sorta thought the same at first, but I think there are a number of reasons to believe Graves was a real person. For one thing, how was Grindelwald (as Graves) able to rise through the MACUSA ranks so quickly? I suppose anything is possible in the Wizarding world, although I doubt even Grindelwald had the “magic” to pull something like this off in such a short amount of time.

For what it’s worth, the film’s producer (David Heyman) confirmed that Percival Graves did, in fact, exist. And according to him, the Graves we see in this film is 100% Grindelwald. The real Graves? I’d say it is likely he was killed.
