If you'll look at who the guy who sentenced them was it makes sense. If it wasn't him they would have had a far softer sentence.

Graves/Grindelwald obviously wants to get rid of these two - so with the power that he has (Graves obviously is a very important person at MACUS), he sentenced them to death.
