Can Teachers Have Sexual Relationships w/ Adult Students?

With issues such as being left behind, transferring, illness, ... you can have 18-21 year olds in high school (legal adults).

Can teachers have sexual relationships w/ adult students? I'm just wondering on how this is viewed from legal/ethical viewpoints.

reply

Not sure on the laws state-by-state, but I do know that in some states it is a felony for a teacher to engage in a sexual relationship with a student, even if that student is of the legal age of consent. Texas for example.

Teachers have power over students, which undercuts the notion that consent can be given freely; we control their lives, which means it's not fair to the individual student, or to the other students in the class; it's an abuse of the teacher's power, and compromises both the real and perceived fairness of that student's grades and of any overall curve in the class.

I'd say broadly speaking, legally yes, ethically no.🐭

It's considered sexual harassment if one partner is in a position of authority over the other.

If the student is over 18 they can't charge a teacher with a crime. But it's not a good career move, it's unethical and stupid.

I knew a high school teacher, married w/2 kids. Divorced his wife and married one of his students right after she turned 18. He kept his job. A**hole.

Working in a school district for a long time, I saw some very sketchy behavior on the part of several teachers and administrators.

She'd get fired, but not go to jail.
