I'm not bashing this film for it is yet to be released. But whenever a filmmaker, who previously made a film that is unique and creative, comes up with another unique and creative film, things end up going wrong. I predict that Before I Wake will be for Mike Flanagan what Southland Tales was for Richard Kelly. That being said, I'll reserve my judgement until I see it. What do you think?
I hope it's good. I love this director's work and the trailer looks great. Cast is good. The only thing making me wonder is the title change. Somnia is such an arresting title, and so representative of Flanagan's style. Whenever I see a resonant title changed to something generic like this, it feels like a suit got nervous and if the suits are getting nervous, there might be other tinkering going on.
I agree. It reminds me of the Weinsteins changing so many things with the Scream series when it had proven to work solidly with no imposing on the writer and director. Absentia and Oculus were both amazing films in my opinion, and Flanagan did those with little to no production interference. Just makes me think the producers are interfering with his work when it's proven to be more successful when left to his own creative decisions.
