fostonrep has written a pretty good synopsis of the movie, except in the script, it was only Kate's character (Jessie) that tries to manipulate the kid's gift, by showing him photos and videos of her deceased son. Mark is really against this, he feels like she's abusing the kid, while her argument is there's nothing wrong with it and she thinks it can help them heal.
Cody knows his nightmare (The Canker Man) comes to life when he's asleep, so he tries to stay awake every night. Jessie, who is annoyed by this, gives him pills to sleep one night. That night, Cody's dream is different, everything is darker, and the Canker Man appears in front of Jessie and Mark. They try to wake him up, but they can't. Mark is then eaten alive by the monster, and Jessie jumps from the bedroom to go to the neighbors and ask for help. Later, the police and ambulance come, and they take Cody away from her.
Jessie, feeling sorry for what she did to Cody, tries to find out the truth. She goes to meet the former guardian, who is in a mental hospital, and he mentions about the Canker Man. Cody has once mentioned the name to her before, but she thought it was just a little kid's nightmare, so she didn't really think about it. Now, she knows that the monster is real, so she tries to find out about Cody's real parents, and what happened to them.
She later finds out that Cody's mother died of cancer when he was really young. Because of that, he thought that cancer was a monster, and it ate his mother. And what he has pictured as the Canker Man is what his mother looked like the last time he saw her (hair gone, pale, dark circle under her eyes, bony fingers).

The movie starts off with kate bosworth and husband adopting the kid. The kid has a gift, wherein whatever he dreams becomes reality. So at first, he dreamed about butterflies, next about he dead son of the parents, and then about 'kanker man', a scary creature who swallowed his mom,former guardian and her husband. The parents manipulate the kid in order to see their son again, but soon the mom tries to find out how the boy's mom pass away. It turns out in the end that the kanker man is actually the boy's mum who died due to cancer.The last image of his mum is how he pictured her to be when she was small.As he grew, cancer became 'kanker man'
