Great plot but am concerned.

I'm loving the plot of this film, it is quite original. My only concern for this film though is that it'll stick to the typical horror movie conventions and that will just kill the whole thing. They have a potentially beautiful (in a psychological way) story and I'd just hate to see it go to waste. I feel if someone like Guillermo Del Toro had this story in his hands, it'd be brilliant. Anyone agree or just me?

I slightly agree and I do feel like there is going to be some typical horror movie stuff in here, but Mike Flanagan is very, very smart and I think he'll do a good job at telling the story in a unique way.

reply

Except Guillermo Del Toro is a hack compared to Flanagan.

I'm worried about the name change and the delayed release date. "Somnia" was an extremely interesting title that stayed true to Mike Flanagan's style (i.e. Oculus and Absentia). The only reason I can think of as to why they'd push back the release date is so that Before I Wake wouldn't have to compete with The Avengers: Age of Unoriginality. It just seems like the producers are getting too involved in his work since it's been proven that Flanagan can make a really well-made film without the studio tampering with it.

reply

I doubt the avengers was the reason for the move.

reply

It was. Flanagan has said so on his Twitter and Facebook page.

I just found out this was Flanagan, which boosts my interest and yet makes me feel worried. When I saw the trailer before I knew this it looked pretty silly and forgettable. But I'm hoping it's just bad advertising.

In other news HE'S *beep* DIRECTING GERALD'S GAME!

The Studio can trump Flanagan regarding the name change to the movie so it sounds more commercially marketable as a horror/thriller. Now that Flanagan has had success the stakes are higher for The Studio to make more money so their big shot execs take over.
Unfortunately if the movie underperforms in terms of profit, Flanagan will probably be blamed for it, but will continue to get ops to write direct with less creative control.
If the movie makes bank then expect Flanagan to get higher budgeted movie, and creativity decision making ops so he can weave his way into getting more attention from bigger studio's and lead actor's attention.

I really enjoyed this. Went into it totally cold without reading any reviews or watching any trailers. Definitely worth watching.

This plot is not original but copied from The Lathe of Heaven, about a character whose dreams alter reality.

I'm sorry the Coen brothers don't direct the porn I watch. They're hard to get ahold of, okay? o
