Anyone bothered by the ending/music near the end?

The film is fantasy pure and simple. At the same time, since this is fantasy, they could have made it so that all the 'taken' people came back -

As things stand - the little kid killed quite a few people and we have happy music playing in the ending credits. Imagine what will happen if the little one ever gets to see a movie about a nuclear bomb - bye bye New York.

I guess to make this a happy ending, they could have infused it with a bit of science - give him some sort of night pills which allow him to sleep but without dreaming.

But yeah - that little music in the end bothers me quite a bit - perhaps if they changed the final tune into a dark foreboding tune, it would work. Or -give it an actual happy ending, so that it would match the music's cheerful tone.

While it's not really a happy ending it's at the very least hopeful and not utterly devastating like some of Mike Flanagan's other movies. Personally I thought the uplifting tune was justified.

Having optimistic/joyful songs to conclude dark movies with unhappy endings isn't that uncommon really. I remember J-horror movies loved to place catchy pop songs in the credits, regardless of how the movie ended.

I prefered the bitter sweet ending. It would have felt like a cop-out if everyone was all of the sudden back like nothing from the movie even mattered.

LOL

That would actually be very very unhealthy for his mind, as dreams help us process things from the subconscious.

It was very befitting for the 'journey' of Cody. His last line is "Thanks for bringing me home, mom." And the song that plays is titled I've Come Home, but it does talk about the scars, etc. So, again, it's not uber happy.

The song is called 'Welcome home' and I think it summarizes the ending pretty well. I do agree it may sound a little too much like a happy ending that in some ways it was and in some ways it wasn't.

Then you'd love Strange Invaders (1983) (no sarcasm).

Omg, I literally just said the same thing! Why did they make it seem like it was a happy ending and where tf did everyone go?

reply

They clearly suggested in the end that his powers are growing. If he can make his thoughts manifest into a butterfly even while he's awake, one day he'll be able to bring all those people back, just like Bosworth's character says "Well, that depends on you Cody".

It's an ending with hope, things will get back to normal. That's why the happy music.

The ending requires us to use our brains a little. Now isn't that a good thing?

The end music sucks. Whomever picked it should be shot.
