Mike Flannagan can do no wrong: Another unique take on horror

You know its kind of funny, now that I think about it Mike is essentially doing what M. Night Shyamalan has been trying to do his whole career but could never quite get it right(with the exception of Six Sense).

I'm not sure what other people look for in a horror film, but I always give teams massive bonus points for doing something a little different. Even if its a story we've seen before. Though I'd argue Absentia was wholly original and pretty bizarre Oculus was kind of a standard horror film but with a pretty neat ending. Hush was a standard home invasion slasher but with a perspective completely untouched in film up to this point. Now Before I wake will end up being familiar to anyone whos seen the Twilight zone films or series. This concept has sort of been done before, however the choices the parents make are real and fascinating to watch.

The difference between Mike and Shyamalan among a lot of horror writers is generally speaking, is that Mike's writing and directing is awesome. On the whole the film is tight, focused and the cinematography is immersive.

If I had a complaint it would be that all that had communicated up to the climax was swept under the rug a little to easily, for me, but the fact is this kind systematic ignorance has happened in real life so I let it go. I'm also starting to think I'm not a fan of Dash Mihok. He's kind of hard to take seriously. He seems to only work in lighter fare buddy/neighbor roles.

If I were to take away all points for uniqueness its a solid 7/10. I was enraptured for most of it. Thomas Janes climactic scene threw me for a loop and changed the dynamic of the film. The Shyamalan-esque twist had me tearing up pretty hard. For anyone whos lost a parent or family member in that way this is going to be a bit of a cryfest.

Flannagan is consistently good. Shylamananam is sometimes great and sometimes crap. What's better? I dunno.

But yea, I was all lumpy throat for the kid at the end of this film - that would have sucked from his perspective and it was also like a release that his new mum could help him deal with it.
