Will someone please explain what was so unique about this movie? What makes is any different then, let's say, The Last Picture Show? Or dozens of other cheapjack coming of age movies? It's almost like a parody of indie movies...hitting the proper beats emotionally and cuing all the obscure oldie songs. CRAP!!!!!
There is no "off" position on the genius switch.
There is no need to explain a movie to someone who feels compelled to come out in public and start a discussion about it.

I actually lived through the After School Special era and I sincerely WISHED back then that they had nudity in them. But whether you care for it or not, you can't possibly say this movie is as trite or moralistic as an After-School Special. It doesn't have a clear, easy moral. If it were an "AFS" movie, she would have gotten pregnant and then nearly died in an attempted back-alley abortion--but learned her lesson by the time it was all over.
And what I really don't understand is that everybody has grown up and had some sort of coming of age, but very few people have ever been stalked by a serial killer. Why do people complain about the occasional "dozens" of coming-age-movie and not the much more numerous serial killer movies?
