What's "tired" is people labeling movies "hipster" for no reason whatsoever and then dismissing them based on the fact that they supposedly appeal to this almost completely fictitious subculture (I'd reckon at least ten people get labelled "hipsters" for every person who actually considers THEMSELVES to be one).
I've at least SEEN "Me, Earl and the Dying Girl" and this. Neither are all that "hipster", nor are they much like each other. This is based on graphic novel that has been around for years and is set way back in the 70's. "Earl" is pretty much an adaption of a modern-day young adult novel, kind of in the same genre as John Green adaptations ("Paper Towns" or the other one where Shailene Woodley plays the world's cutest cancer patient).
The only recent movie this KINDA reminded me of is another Shailene Woodley movie called "White Bird in a Blizzard", but that is more fictional. This is based more on real life and has more of a comedy element. There's also "Ghost World" years back.
But I guess if you're an ignoramus, all movies that don't have lots of special effects and explosions probably all seem the same.
