I really hated this movie

... but not for the acting. I think the actors really did a decent enough job, but hated, HATED the material. The subject matter was just incredibly gross, and I want my 2 hours back!

If you don't want a repeat of this waste of your time and money, you should start to read about the film's you want to see before going to see them. Plenty of information is available that doesn't spoil them including a synopsis, trailers, interviews with directors and cast etc. It was clear from the beginning that this was a controversial film about the sexual experimentation of a 15 year old girl in the 70's based on a gritty graphic novel and that she began her journey with her mother's 35 year old boyfriend. The trailers made it even more clear and by the time you would have watched some interviews ,you would have known with even greater clarity that this movies' content was not for you.

In today's world of filmmaking more and more previously taboo subject matter is being tackled and being brought into the light and aired. For example " Spotlight", nominated for a Golen Globe and Academy Award,is about the news team who investigated and brought to light the pedophilia amongst priests in Boston, the country and eventually world wide. An issue the Cathlic church knew about for years but hid, fostered and allowed to continue. If a viewer is Cathlic and would be offended and disgusted by this subject matter then he/ she should not see it. However, they would have had to do some reading about this film before blindly going out and seeing it just because others said it was a good film or they had heard about it at thedrinking fountain or coffee machine at work. Then there is " Carol", another award nominee ,that is about a lesbian relationship and " Tangerine" ,an award nominee, that is about transgenders . There is also, The Danish Girl " which is about Lilly Elbe who underwent the first transgender surgery with Eddie Redmaine nominated for a best actor award by a slew of film organizations including the Academy and Golden Globes.I can well imagine how disgusted and offended certain viewers wound be if they found themselves in the audience any one of these films. Ya, just gotta read and watch trailers to avoid unpleasant movie going experiences.

Great post Maggiesview. I couldn't have said better myself. If she had just read the jacket she would have known what this movie was about.

What kind of moron just picks a movie based on the cover picture and title?

MANY people do not want to know ahead of time the content of a movie, or book, or even what's on the restaurant menu. Some of us like to be surprised and rely on ratings or an overall climate of praise when making a selection. To call someone a moron for wanting to savor a movie without details is rather over the top. In the case of this movie, I went by the description on the DVD jacket but that did not prepare me sufficiently for the abundance of nudity/sex scenes. The thing is, I've seen films with similar subject matter and far less blatancy. I don't disagree with nudity/sex per se, but an overabundance is not revelatory and often overtakes the story. For my taste, that's what happened in Diary of a Teenage Girl.

A movie to tell about the horrors of the sex offending priests can be traumatizing for some ...but I don't guess that the movie is glorifying it or making it an attractive thing? It sounds like that is what this movie has done. Very upsetting. And perhaps someone might be uncomfortable about the story line of Danish Girl and him being transgender...but that isn't really to be compared to adult men having sex with their girlfriends teenage daughters in my opinion.

If you hated it why did you watch all of it?, I though it was a good movie

reply

Acting was good, script was so-so. The subject matter was fine, but I thought there'd be some humor, and Minnie was too whiny.

reply

I think you got my main issue with the movie. Sure I didn't care for the subject matter, but more than that, I think it's the fact that I simply didn't care for ANY of the characters. The main character was especially annoying! The others were simply Sh!tty people with zero redeeming qualities.

They all just sucked!!!

reply

agree with you.. i hated this movie

reply

Well, first off, as the second poster here said, you should maybe do some more research so you don't end up watching movies you hate. I don't care for some movies I see, but I rarely HATE a movie I watch.

Second, if you do see a movie you hate, why do you feel a driving need to come to the IMDB site of the movie and complain about it here? It sounds a lot more like you're trolling or trying to pick a fight. If you hated the movie, just don't watch it again and try to get on with the rest of your life.

You can always bank on an Imdb message board to have some dickhead saying they want their 2 or whatever hours back. Pathetic. quite pathetic.

I also found it despicable. And no, I don't plan to read about every movie I plan to see in order to decide if it's for me or not. The very fact of this movie is just yuck.
I found the story and characters to be unbearably tawdry w/no redeeming values whatsoever. I agree w/scorp123-1, the subject matter was gross - relentlessly gross. Kid porn all gussied up as an award winning movie. Hollywood's new normal. No thanks.

Agreed!
