Why do some characters don't seem to get older ?

I didn't see the end of season 1 yet, I'm at episode 11th, but I noticed that some characters don't get older.
Max the girl, between 2034 and 2043, she's the same. Ramse, between 1987 and 2011, he stays the same too. But strangely, Jennifer does age between 2017 and 2043.

How come ? Is it something I will understand later ?

Its more or less explained in episode 11 (and more clearly in episode 13) that Jones' serum, which causes 'time to move around' time-travelers also slows down their ageing and allows them to heal faster. Presumably, the same applies to Cole and any other time-travelers.

They actually explain this a bit more next season.

Yes but Max didn't took the serum.
The time has just past for her. She didn't travel in time

Max was the girl from deacon's team right? There was nothing special abt her that would mean she wouldn't age or anything. If she doesn't look sufficiently older (i can hardly remember how she looked honestly) it means nothing at all in the show's universe.

And Jennifer is a time-traveler too, but she's aging obviously.

I think the thing is supposed to be that Jennifer lived through those years, so aged normally. When the time travelers jump through time they don't age because they didn't live through it.
Also the serum they are given in order to splinter and come back together has something to do with it.
If someone who didn't time travel didn't age, I don't know the answer to that, maybe someone else can answer. Maybe the makeup people didn't do a good aging job on her. Maybe she is just one of those people who don't show their age very much.

reply

Just to answer, after seeing both seasons, if Jennifer looks older, it's because she lived the all way from 1914-1918 to 2043.
She must be around 160 years old. (spoilers end of season 2)

And yeah, for Max, it's surely because she wasn't really important.

reply

I don't even remember Max...but not having dramatic changes to your looks in only 10 years isn't really something abnormal. Lots of people change very little in the course of a decade.

Ramse has the time travel serum that greatly slows his aging.

Jennifer hasn't been treated with anything and ages normally, she was just able to survive the apocalypse because of being a primary along with Cole and Cassandra repeatedly saving her throughout her life.

Also anyone who is a 12 Monkey, or their offspring, are engineered human beings with longer life spans and stronger biology than normal humans.

As if it's something you'll understand later...probably not would be my guess.

It raises an interesting question with regards to Jennifer actually. She does have the serum (she has to, otherwise she can't time-travel). So why does she age when Ramse didn't (remember, Ramse had, at the time he was stuck in 1987, only time-jumped once so presumably had the same amount of serum in his system as Jennifer had).

Either the serum is cleansed from Jennifer's system somehow, or perhaps Jennifer spends a prolonged period of time outside her natural time-span. Maybe Old Jennifer from the 2040's is actually closer to 100 than she is to 60, chronologically speaking.

They age slower, it was mentioned in an episode when Ramsay was in the hospital that his bones were that of an older person and theres the whole thing with his old man hand.

Jennifer has just been dropped further back in time so she now has a lot more time to develop and age into the "mother" than we first thought.

I am trying to recall when Jennifer first time traveled. I do recall that in the season just ended, in one of the later episodes, she travels back to the base with them and exclaims something like WOW that is a blast, like it was her first time.

But she could have traveled a lot more than that, starting from a future date, and gone back in time and shown up there. But there is a long time period when she does not travel. She always watches others splinter away and continues in her time stream. I think she did not travel at all in her original time stream until just recently in the series, around
2040 something. That is why she ages.

When do you recall Jennifer time traveling?

When do you recall Jennifer time traveling?

We've only seen her time-travel the one time. I have no reason to think she's been time-traveling off-screen, but anything's possible.

Edit: Although writetopcat seems to have understood my point, maybe that's because they haven't finished the season, because Jennifer's last trip of the season slipped my mind.

Yeah, that's what I thought but was not certain.

Right. I don't recall her being out of her time stream, like showing up back in the 1940s or something like that either. I suppose she could make such a trip in the future, which we have not been shown evidence of yet. Anything is possible as you say.

My comment above was in response to that. I wasn't certain but was pretty sure Jennifer had never time traveled through the machine (until the end of this season), nor received the serum, which explains her aging. You helped clear that up. Thanks.

Another possibility is that the older Jennifer had gotten the injection when she was younger, but had lived a

How do you mean? Like someone takes the serum way back in time and injects a young Jennifer? So when she looks kind of old to us, she is really 100 to 150 years old or something? That is possible too.

When did Dr. Jones perfect the formula? It was sometime after the machine was built. And that was when? The 2030s or 2040s? So someone from that time would have to take some of the formula/serum back in time with them to when old Jennifer was young and inject her back then.
Right?
Or did you imagine a different scenario?

This is what I love about the time travel thing, it is a brain teaser.

reply

Aging makeup is difficult and expensive. They didn't have the budget for it.

The characters are visibly supposed to have aged, but you just have to accept that the effects budget had to go to other scenes.
