Thoughts on season 3

I thought the first two episodes were pretty bad. Then there were a couple of decent ones. Then it got stupid again. Then there were a couple more decent episodes. And the last episode was pretty bad.

I loved the first two seasons of this show. I don't know why they got rid of Roofie. I felt Cal subtracted more than he added.

The writing got pretty bad. I don't like it when the IQs of the characters drop 50 points just to move the plot along. Also, why not just bring a tattoo artist into the prison to finish the tat? And when the warden died, why didn't the ghosts just float the keys over to the cell? Why did they have to go to Cal's house and write him a note and draw on his face? Just go get the keys. Some very bad writing this season.

Overall I felt this season was very inconsistent. I wish they would have gotten more into the poker games. I thought that subplot was interesting and felt that Kevin should have played poker to make money for the business. Then they never really did anything with it. They just hung out with him and let him treat them like garbage. Kevin has that "gift" too. So why treat him like garbage? If anything he should have been nicer to Kevin so he didn't become a champion poker player too and would have cut into Danny's earnings.

It's a shame b/c the first two seasons were very entertaining. This season was mostly crap.

Any thoughts? (not necessarily on my thoughts, but on season 3)

Yeah, season 3 was pretty bad. That's what happens when you get rid of almost the entire original cast.

Oh, well, Tyler Labine will probably be back next year on another show where he'll play a lovable slacker...

reply

I'll watch anything he's in, but man, he does pick quite a few stinkers.

They didn't need to change anything. The series pretty much wrote itself. Same cast, same forumula, different ghost adventure every episode. It was working just fine. The stuff that got changed wasn't hurting the show, so why get rid of it?

reply

I enjoyed it, quite uncritically, but I did binge most of it with a hangover. That probably changes one's perspective considerably - I was far from being at my sharpest. In fact it could be fairly said that I was dull as a box of rocks at the time. Perhaps this is the best state of mind for Season Three?

My fondness for Kal Penn probably helped, too.

I'm on ep 6 ish right now and I'm so confused. I feel like I waited a year to find out cliffhangers and it came back as a totally different show! The way they wrapped those storylines was CRAP. And I miss Lucy Devito's character... Do we ever hear about her again? Yes, it's funny. I'll see it through. But it doesn't seem like the same show. Really really disappointed as I was a huge fan. :(

reply

I agree with all the posters before me. I waited for a year for this show and it really stunk. They missed the winning formula. The stories did not interconnect. Just disappointing.

I liked the addition of Kal Penn. for me, everying wad great untill they introduced danny poker. It went downhill from there. They didn't build on his character. Actually, until the last episodes, i didn't really get his intentions or even his worth to the series. In fact, i feel he ruined the finale. I hope the next season, they will go back to solving ghost mysteries.

When this show first came out I watched a few episodes and never got into it. When I saw Kal Penn was in season 3, I decided to give this show another shot since I just saw him in a recent New Girl episode and he was funny. And before that I haven't seen him in anything in years. I binged the whole season in one day. I absolutely love it! The two have amazing chemistry and it feels like Harold and Kumar but with a better Harold and with ghosts. I'm sure it's different for you guys since you've watched seasons 1 and 2 and now the show is different. But coming from a guy who never did and just started watching at season 3, it rocks! I wish Kal Penn was in season 1 and 2 as well! I'm actually really glad I just started at season 3 because it seems like everyone who watched the first two seasons doesn't like this one. You guys are missing out! Now I'm watching the first two seasons and it's seriously not the same. Season 3 is far superior.

reply

But having said all that. I do think if they slowly introduced Kal Penn instead of throwing him in the show it would have been better. Maybe they should have had Kal Penn portray the poker player who sees ghosts but in the end he lives and they become partners. And then in season 4 they live with each other instead of this season. And they both see ghosts and solve cases together. Because it is kind of frustrating when Pac can talk to the ghosts and Clyde just sits there and does nothing and has to be explained everything.

I get where you are coming from and I respect your opinion, but how are "we" missing out? "We" saw it and didn't like it.

reply

Right?? I don't think saying "if you watch season 3 only its great" redeems the show at all. I'm not missing out- I didn't want to watch a 12 hour Harold and kumar. I wanted to watch season 3 of deadbeat... Which this barely qualifies as.

If season 3 would have been the first season of this show I might not have watched a second season of the show.

As it stands now, I'll give it another season. Maybe it can hit (or "re-hit") its stride. Half that writing staff needs to go. You can't just make your characters temporarily stupid in order to move the plot along.

The Hawk Smith episode shows me there's at least 1 good writer there. Let him/her do more.

And I absolutely loved the idea of a ghost helping a poker player win $$$, but they did nothing with it. I was hoping that Kevin would have to beat Danny at poker or something, but they took a completely different (and disappointing) route. Kevin had no reason to kiss this guy's a$$. Kevin had the same "power" and could have been using it to win the money he was trying to get Danny to invest.

....And then the ghosts in the prison not getting the keys, but going to Kal's house to write him a note.

And Kevin and Kal just bickering back and forth over the stupidest things went on way too long.

Some of this season was just pure garbage.

Same. S1 and 2 were good fun and Roofi was great. Unfortunately they lost something with the change in cast. I was really looking forward to Kal Penn's appearance, only to see that they sort of stuck him in because they were able to get him and not a big part necessary to the plot. He just wasn't intrinsic to the show other than Kevin having a buddy, so Penn was completely underutilized. The script was lacking in general. When the Poker ghost was introduced, it seemed like they were going to have Kevin have a poker ghost also, but then they switched gears. The Poker guy plot line was dead dull.

To me, ALL the characters became unlikeable, whereas 1&2 had you empathize with Kevin and Sue's plight and made things between everyone very funny, both subtly and very in your face. Somehow, though this season's jokes were visual and gross (which I don't mind a bit), they seemed more for the gross out factor than actually being funny (as they were in 1&2). Too bad, I really liked the show before. Vote went from an 8 to a 4.

When he was watching the poker game on TV and saw the ghost I thought "Okay, now this is going to get good." and they really didn't do much with that plot line (other than bring the Danny Poker in, but Kevin should have made money by playing poker instead of being Danny's b**ch).

I kept waiting for it to get good, but with the exception of a couple episodes season 3 was pretty bad. I'd say my favorite episode was the Hawk Smith one. Other than that I can't even remember the episodes b/c they were so unmemorable.

reply

I'm on the last episode of season 3 and ugh. Season 3 was not great, I won't say its horrible but it is seriously disappointing. Before Pac was maybe a bit slow but a nice guy who seemed too really want too help the ghosts, now be comes across as a jerk. The Danny Poker character was way overplayed and needed to be gone like 5 episodes ago. And I love Kal Pen but he's so much better then Clyde.

reply

I have really not enjoyed this season. I feel like there was even more crude humor than in previous seasons and I really don't think it needed it. Like the whole dog crap on the rug scene was just disgusting and pointless. And I hate that Lucy's character is just completely gone. She was my favorite part of the show. This season is so far from the charm of the first two.

reply

I feel kinda bad everyone but me was so disappointed. These are all valid criticisms, they just didn't bother me...

Maybe we should ALL watch next season with a hangover. Well, those of us who drink obviously. Then, if it turns out to be better again, we can re-watch it another time, when we're more alert!
